Zdeněk Štybar (Quick Step) and Hanka Kupfernagel (Stevens) showed their World Champion pedigree by taking commanding wins at the 2011 Baden Supercross in Switzerland.
Kupfernagel took the Baden Supercross win over Achermann and Havlikova.
The four-time World Champion Kupfernagel took an early lead and kept it until the end, winning by 30 seconds over home favorite Swiss racer Jasmin Achermann. The German racer was surprised by her form, as she’s been focusing on training on the time trial and track bikes lately, and will compete in the Omnium in the German track championships in Berlin. Kupfernagel said she’s not used to starting her cyclocross season so early with a win, but was very pleased by the result. Pavla Havlikova rounded out the podium.

On the men’s side, two of the top cyclocross racers in the world in Štybar and France’s Francis Mourey (first and fourth at the 2011 World Championships, respectively) toed the line at the Swiss race. But Štybar kept the diminutive FDJ French rider at bay to make it two-for-two this weekend, after taking a win on Saturday in the Toi Toi Cup, in Stribo, Czech Republic.
The world champion arrived at 2 a.m. the night before, and wasn’t sure of his legs entering the race after traveling and racing the day before. “It was a very tough race,” Stybar said. “Francis pushed me all the way to the end. I would not have expected such a tough course.”
Despite his focus on his road career, Stybar indicated he will likely return to the Super Baden Cross in the future.
