Katie Compton Solos to Victory at USGP Fort Collins Day 2 – UPDATED: Report, Results and Photos

Katie Compton (Rabobank-Giant) won day two of the New Belgium Cup on Sunday in Fort Collins over Katerina Nash (Luna) and Meredith Miller (Cal Giant-Specialized).

In contrast to yesterday’s slippy slide, today’s race was marked by beautiful sunny weather and a course made blistering fast by the races that happened earlier in the day.

But similar to yesterday was the fact that Compton and Nash were dominant over the rest of the field, and quickly established themselves off the front in tactics that mirrored yesterday’s. Compton pushed the pace with Nash tucked in closely behind, pulling away from the rest. Behind the lead two, Meredith Miller found herself alone in third, obviously feeling much better than on day one, but with Caroline Mani and Mical Dyck (Pro City Racing) fighting hard to close down the gap.

Nash was apparently working the same strategy as day one — never leading but marking Compton closely. Just as it seemed she would pounce to repeat her victory, she was gone. A mechanical killed her chances for a repeat win. Compton rolled to the victory 35 seconds clear of Nash and was quick to announce that she would have liked to have earned the victory without the benefit of Nash’s mechanical issue. Nash was graceful as always in her first defeat of the season.  It is clear that Compton’s form is in development and that she will  strengthen with each race.

Miller narrowly held on to third with Caroline Mani and Mical Dyck charging the final lap to put a big dent in the gap, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Nash retains her lead in the points.
