Belgian Vincent Baestaens (BKCP) took a commanding victory on Day 2 of the 2015 Ellison Park Cyclocross Race.

Baestaens was the 2009 U23 Belgian National Champion, but took most of the American racers and fans by surprise today.

Today was not a day to start fast. If you looked at the front of the field on the first and second lap, it looked nothing like the finish, with Allen Krughoff, Curtis White and Jonathan Page taking turns at the front on the first lap. Krughoff looked particularly inspired, starting just after Meredith Miller’s win in the women’s race.

Of these three riders, only Curtis White was able to maintain a presence near the front of the race for the full hour, while Page and Krughoff faded a bit after the first three laps.

Cameron Dodge, Dan Timmerman and Stephen Hyde all took turns at the front as Baenstaens and Dillman caught the lead group later in the race. Once Baenstaens took off, Timmerman conceded second to Dodge, eventually relinquishing a few more places as well, with Andrew Dillman surging ahead for the final spot on the podium.

Are we witnessing a turning of the tide? The final podium was filled with five riders, all 26 years old or younger.
