The cloudy skies and dropping temperatures kept racers on their toes all day again at Ellison Park, but it wasn’t until the men’s race came to its conclusion that raindrops started to fall. As well as the weather, the races played out eerily similar to Saturday’s race, with Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) and Raphael Gagne (Rocky Mountain) again riding to the wins.

In the women’s race, it was deja vu all over again as Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom/Van Dessel) and Mo Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill) rode at the front, though Cassandra Maximenko, Nikki Thiemann, Natasha Elliot and Emma White were also in the mix. A crash took Emma White out of contention for the podium mid-race, but the other five continued to battle. Van Gilder and Bruno Roy battled in earnest at the front, launching attacks and vying for position. While Van Gilder, Bruno Roy and Elliot took the same podium spots as the day prior, fourth was snatched up by Thiemann with Maximenko in fifth and White hanging on for sixth.

In the men’s race, Zach McDonald (Rapha-Focus) was a man on a mission, vying with Gagne for position early on in the race. Unlike Saturday when the two dangled off the front by a few seconds, the two racers created a huge gap between themselves and the larger chase groups. An untimely crash for McDonald likely reminded him of recent crash-induced injuries, and Gagne continued to solo on the front as McDonald struggled to hang on to the chase group, eventually dropping back to sixth spot and finding himself pedaling in no man’s land between groups. Meanwhile, the chase group of Cameron Dodge, Mike Garrigan, Anthony Clark and Evan McNeely continued to chase down Gagne while battling for position amongst themselves. It was Dodge who would take second spot and McNeely who would pick up third, while Garrigan took fourth and a completely drained Clark rolled in with arms on his handlebars and head down, taking fifth over McDonald.
