Louisville, Kentucky is a top candidate to host the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in 2013, according to Belgian newspaper Gazette Van Antwerpen’s website .
The city has hosted a weekend of the USGP Cyclocross Series for the last three years, has a permanent cyclocross park in the plans and has one of the biggest junior scenes. Would Worlds be the next logical achievement for the Kentucky city?
“This is a blessing for the driving field, a major step forward in the internationalization of the sport,” said Nys. “In fact, I was considering after the 2012 Olympics to retire, but it inspires me to race another winter…even though I am 37.”
UCI Cyclocross coordinator Peter Van Den Abeele confirmed that Louisville is the top consideration for that year.
Does that mean Louisville would also receive a World Cup? Typically Worlds host cities host a World Cup prior to Worlds as a way to iron out the kinks. “If logic is respected, there must be one year earlier a World Cup round in Kentucky area,” Nys suggested.
