Defending U23 Men’s National Champion Spencer Petrov (JAM Fund) will not be defending his title this Sunday at Lakewood Nationals due to a knee injury.

“I’m really disappointed that I am not going to be able to be there, but I’ve been having some trouble with my knee recently. I finally went to see a doctor about it and everything looks good, I just have to take some rest,” Petrov told Cyclocross Magazine.

Petrov won the U23 title last December at the muddy Louisville Nationals. He said the decision to not come to Washington was not easy.

“It was a really difficult decision to not race because this will be my first Nationals missed in 10 years. The most important thing is my health and that has to come first. I have some really big goals for 2020 and so taking the rest was the right decision for me and my future,” Petrov said.

Petrov raced a shortened schedule with the JAM Fund program this season. After a long road season, he kicked his season off at FayetteCross and wrapped it up with a fourth-place finish in the U23 race at the Pan-American Championships in Louisville.

“I really appreciate the support that I’ve had from Knobbe Martens and the JAM Fund in 2019,” Petrov concluded. “I wish I could have gone back to defend my national title but I know there will be another jersey for me in the future.”

Petrov posted more on his Instagram account.
