For today's Mechanical Monday, we are taking a look back at the myths of tubeless tires. With all the rumors, both good and bad, about tubeless tires, it is about time to cut through the fluff and give a real accounting of this ever-growing technology. What are some of the common myths that need answering? We've compiled the list below:

Myth Thirteen: "Tubeless is heavier than tubulars, but lighter than clinchers."
Myth Fourteen: "If I can bottom out without burping, I’m good."
Myth Fifteen: "Tubeless is heavier than tubulars"

With top-tier riders like Mical Dyck finishing as the lead North American Elite Rider at the 2015 Cyclocross World Championship in Tabor, tubeless is becoming too relevant to ignore. Myth Three: “My Road Tubeless or 29er tubeless wheels will work just fine.”

You’ve got a 29er around or a road bike with some Road Tubeless wheels and have been curious about trying those wheels for a tubeless setup on the ’cross bike. The wheels say tubeless, so you’re all set, right?

No. This is because tubeless road rims, including Road Tubeless (a certified standard pioneered by Hutchinson and Shimano) are designed for high-pressure tires (70 PSI or higher), and therefore are particularly challenging to use in a low-pressure setup. There are some tubeless rims we’d strongly recommend avoiding, like the Velocity A23 and Alex/Felt CxR1. There’s a giant center channel to aid in installing the stiff Road Tubeless tire beads, but that channel is also what will cause you burps when the bead of the tire slides over the channel at a low PSI.

Have a UST MTB rim around? Don’t assume that UST rims or MTB tubeless rims work well with ’cross tubeless tires. Nobody makes a UST ’cross tire, so don’t assume a UST rim will work with any tire.
