TRP’s HY/RD cable-pull hydraulic disc brake is the easiest and most-affordable way to add hydraulic braking to your existing disc brake cyclocross bike, and the brakes won our 2013/2014 Editors’ Choice Award because of these merits.

TRP Brakes certainly didn’t rest on their laurels, and quietly added a number of small improvements to the hydraulic disc brake for this cyclocross season.

TRP’s Dave Biehler walks us through a few of the updates in this Cyclocross Magazine video from Interbike 2014 below:

Upgrades include a larger reservoir, a thinner, more flexible reservoir gasket, a stainless steel ring on the piston, and a tiny set screw to prevent closing off the open system due to erroneous adjustment of the push rod lock knob. Got all that?

The changes improve on an already well-received product. Pair a HR/RD with compressionless housing and coated cables and you’ve got a high-performance system that nearly rivals the full hydraulic brake/lever options in feel and braking power. Our only wish is that they also modify the barrel adjuster to avoid confusing racers into thinking they’re tightening the cable tension and adjusting for pad wear.

With the updates, the prices stays the same for the 2014/2015 season, and OEM bikes shipping with the TRP HY/RD hydraulic brake have received the updated brake.
