Ever since we covered our first USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Kansas City in 2007, Steve Tilford has been part of our lives, and will continue to be, despite his sudden, shocking and premature passing yesterday.

Tilford was a joy to speak with and interview, as he was never afraid to speak his mind on a topic at a race or on his blog, and often it was to the benefit of the "average" cyclocross racer.  Tilford offered reasoned opinions on anything from USA Cycling rules to packing for cold weather races. Some considered his post-race words to be cocky, but when considered in the context that he was so dominant in his age group, they were simply honest.

Journalists and media hope athletes will speak their minds instead of reciting clichés and rehearsed soundbites, and in Tilford we found a reliable, informed, accomplished and opinionated interviewee.

In memory of the cycling and cyclocross legend, we've put together a few of our interviews (in text and video) with Tilford over the years. Relive a tiny bit of his life, wisdom and spirit in the clips below.

Racing for the Love of It

After their race at the 2013 Masters Worlds in Louisville, Tilford’s fellow competitor and old buddy Gunnar Shogren recalled getting into a break with Tilford, Don Myrah and Joe Parkin at the Fat Boy criterium at the Sea Otter Classic. Reflecting on that time, Tilford remembered the era, and explained a lot about what kept him going:

“The guys who got into mountain biking back then did it for the love of the sport. I don’t understand guys [who] just quit racing bikes and just hang it up. It’s like, I don’t need to race bikes to ride bikes.”

Tilford certainly demonstrated his love for riding and racing, and he certainly packed many of his years with as much racing as possible. “That’s the cool thing about ’cross coming back. Every time I do a ’cross race, I’m like I gotta concentrate on this. And then you ride a mountain bike race, and it’s like, I need to do more mountain bike races, and then you get into a big road race…there’s not enough…”

I don’t understand guys [who] just quit racing bikes and just hang it up. It’s like, I don’t need to race bikes to ride bikes.”
