The Euro Invasion has hit the East Coast, and UK-based cyclocrosser Gabby Day has been staying with me in the days leading up to Nittany. This 26-year-old racer has never been to the US, and while maybe the Philadelphia airport wasn’t the best introduction to the country, I’ve been trying to show her some of the nicer parts. Granted, it’s been raining every day, which is going to mean a very muddy start to her US cyclocross season, but she’s taking in stride. With her first US race only a few days away, I wanted to ask her a few questions about her first impressions of the US and how it feels being a woman in the sport.
Philadelphia, PA — Nittany Cross, the first two of 14 races in Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Series, serves as the closest thing to opening day regional ’crossers have to mark the start of a season that for many goes into the new year. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania — Hup, hup and away! Shortly after the board and promoters of the Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Series (The MAC) announced the 2011 schedule, over 1,100 entrants registered for the first two events. Starting in Breinigsville for the Nittany Lions ’Cross, the pair will take part in eight events on the east side of America. Other key events will include Charm City, which is a double weekend of racing, the Nor’easter Cross and Ellison Park in Rochester. The trip will conclude with the Gloucester GP races in near Boston.
It’s that time of year when cyclocross series start announcing their autumn programs. And, as usual, the well-organized MAC Cyclocross on America’s eastern seaboard is …
