The 2019/20 Telenet UCI World Cup resumes this Saturday at one of the sport’s storied locations in Tabor, Czech Republic.
Home of the 2001, 2010 and 2015 World Championships and the 2003 and 2017 European Championships, Tabor has also hosted 9 World Cups this millennium. After taking a 3-year World Cup break following the 2015 World Championships, the series returned to Tabor last year.
The city of Tabor dates back to the 15th century, and the city is located about an hour’s drive south of Prague. Saturday’s World Cup course is located at the Komora Sports Complex situated south of the city proper.
Last year’s races featured a Dutch sweep, with Lucinda Brand (Telenet Baloise Lions) taking the Elite Women’s win and Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon – Circus) winning race 4 of what is now his current 29-race winning streak.
Elite Women Preview
Brand returns as a favorite in the Elite Women’s race. She will be joined by a number of young Dutch stars, including the toast of 2019 thus far Yara Kastelijn (777), who will be showing off her new Euro Champ’s jersey, U23 Euros winner Ceylin Alvarado (Corendon – Circus) and last year’s Tabor runner-up Annemarie Worst (777).
Katerina Nash (Clif Pro Team) returns home in the World Cup leader’s jersey after her first and second at the U.S. World Cups and 7th at World Cup Bern. Nash has 198 points through 3 races, and Maghalie Rochette (Specialized x Feedback Sports) is in 2nd with 175 and Kaitie Keough (Cannondale p/b Cyclocross World) is in 3rd with 146.
Other American Elite Women joining Keough are Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight), Anna Megale (Trek Cyclocross Collective), Rebecca Gross (Zero D Racing) and Corey Coogan Cisek (CCC Racing).
Elite Men Preview
Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) enters Tabor with a perfect sheet in the World Cups thus far. He swept the two contests in the U.S. and then won at World Cup Bern.
What’s different this time around? Mathieu van der Poel.
Van der Poel returns for his first World Cup of the 2019/20 season. He is coming off a hard-fought win at the Euro Championships in Italy and a bit easier victory back in Belgium at Jaarmarktcross on Monday.
Van der Poel and his brother David will take the start line with a heavy heart after the passing of their grandfather Raymond Poulidor on Wednesday at age 83. The Van der Poel brothers will start Saturday’s World Cup and Sunday’s Flandriencross before attending Poulidor’s funeral on Tuesday.
Toon Aerts (Telenet Baloise Lions) is second in the World Cup standings and Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) third.
Max Judelson (Voler / Easton / HRS / Rock Lobster) and Tyler Cloutier (TCCX) are representing for North America.
The Elite Women’s race takes place at 7 a.m. EST and the Elite Men’s at 8:30 a.m. EST. Coverage in the U.S. is available via the NBC Sports Gold app, and in Canada via FloBikes.
