ASHEVILLE, North Carolina—An exciting solo breakaway in the last laps of his race earned Spencer Whittier (Privateer Cyclocross Chattanooga) the Masters 30-34 “baby masters” title on a clear but chilly morning.
Toby Swanson (Ravenna Capital Management) and Chris Drummond (SPCX p/b R.K. BLACK) rolled over the line 21 and 29 seconds back respectively to complete the podium after sitting together with Whittier for most of the race.
Right off the start line, last year’s sixth place finisher Swanson attacked, taking the first corner holeshot and building up a lead of around 10 seconds on the chasing group of Whittier and Swanson with the remaining racers trailing close behind.

As Swanson appeared to fatigue on the course’s climbs, his two followers gradually reeled him in, making contact and forming a group of three on the third lap.

Switching positions occasionally the trio battled around the length of the course until Whittier made his move near the end of the fourth lap, breaking away with a strong solo effort that Swanson and Drummond couldn’t match.
