Tire Review: Ritchey Excavader Cyclocross Tire Review
Racing and Riding Impressions: The Ritchey Excavader is aptly named, as this tire digs into the soft dirt really well. On the pavement, the tire rolls quite smoothly, thanks to its semi-continuous center tread. At low pressures, the tire does everything well, as the side paddles and knobs engage the ground and provide traction, but at higher clincher pressures (40 psi or more) on loose or muddy trails, the tire was a bit prone to rear wheel slippage on climbs or under braking due to the almost continuous center ridge. On the rear, pointing the tread “arrows” backwards helped loose conditions performance. (Note: Ritchey will be releasing a 120 TPI WCS version this season.)
