The 2019 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships in Winter Park, Colo. wrapped up on Sunday with the Short Track races. The last day of racing provided riders the opportunity to double up their Saturday XCO performances or score a bit of redemption if they had a bad day.
The fast and furious races were 20 minutes plus 3 laps for the Pro Women and Men. As always, a number of cyclocross and gravel folks toed the line with their fat, knobby tires.
Pro Women
The 2019 Nationals weekend was all about Chloe Woodruff (Stan’s – Pivot Pro Team), with the Arizonan winning Saturday’s XCO race and doubling up in the Short Track race. The win demonstrated the Short Track skill she showed earlier this summer when she won the race at the Nove Mesto UCI World Cup.
“We had a tailwind on the pavement climb, a pretty good one, and the descent was pretty smooth with not a lot of passing opportunities, and a lot of bermed corners, so I stuck with a relatively lightweight tire, which was a risk, but I think it paid off,” Woodruff said about her win.
Alexis Skarda (Spintertainment) took silver and Rose Grant (Stan’s – Pivot Pro Team) bronze.
Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek/Knight) made the trip over from Colorado Springs and got all the way up to third from a back row start before finishing seventh. Hannah Finchamp (Clif Pro Team) finished 9th, Kaysee Armstrong (Liv Cycling) 11th, Crystal Anthony (Liv Cycling) 12th, Evelyn Dong (Pivot – Stan’s NoTubes) 13th and Jen Malik (Red Kite Racing) 30th.

Pro Men
Christopher Blevins (Specialized) took a DNF in Saturday’s XCO race, but on Sunday, he bounced back to take the Short Track win. Blevins won the 2018 U23 Cyclocross National Championship in Reno, so success is not new for him in the shorter format.
“Cypress [Gorry] was hanging on, he was fairly close when we got into the single-track, so I couldn’t relax when we hit it. Also, when you attack at this high an altitude, recover you don’t recover as much, so I wanted to save it for the very end,” Blevins said about his last-lap win.
Former Junior Cyclocross Worlds team member Cypress Gorry (Rouleur Devo p/b DNA Cycling) took silver and Stephan Davoust (Giant Factory Off-Road Team) bronze.
XCO National Champ Keegan Swenson (Stan’s – Pivot Pro Team) finished 8th, Payson McElveen (Orange Seal Off-Road Team), Grant Ellwood (303 Project) 16th, Brian Matter (Linear Sport Racing) 20th and Jamey Driscoll 22nd.

Women 19+
U23 women racers participated in the Women 19+ race on Sunday. 2018 Masters Cyclocross National Champ Monica Lloyd (Olympia Orthopaedic Associates) finished fifth and Ellie Mitchell (NW Women’s Cyclocross Project) took seventh.
U23 Men
Zach Calton (Summit National Team) took the win in the U23 Men’s Short Track race to complete a successful weekend. Henry Nadell (Construction Zone Racing) finished 6th, Caleb Swartz (Bear Pro Team) 8th, Nick Lando (Bear Pro Team) 11th, Cooper Willsey 16th, Brannan Fix 18th, Calder Wood 27th, Ross Ellwood (Boulder Junior Cycling) 30th and Sam Noel 36th.
Junior Women
Madigan Munro (Boulder Junior Cycling) wrapped her successful weekend with another close silver in the Junior Women’s Short Track race. Katie Clouse (DNA Pro Cycling) finished fourth.
