On Wednesday while we were traveling home from Denmark, Europe’s cyclocrossers were back in Belgium to kick off the post-Worlds march to the end of the season with a mid-week race at Parkcross Maldegem.
The race featured a few new jerseys of note. In the Elite Women’s race, Sanne Cant (IKO – Beobank) was back in the rainbow stripes for a third year after her late-race win against the Dutch armada in Bogense on Saturday.
But in the Elite Men’s race, Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon – Circus) showed off his new rainbow stripes, while Wout van Aert (Cibel – Cebon Offroad Team) appeared in the black kit of his 2018/19 trade team for the one time he will be wearing it this season. After Wednesday’s race, Van Aert now turns his attention to the upcoming road season with his new Lotto – Visma WorldTour team.

Top honors in the Elite Women’s race went to Denise Betsema (Marlux – Bingoal), with Laura Verdonschot (Marlux – Bingoal) finishing second and Annemarie Worst (Steylaerts – 777) third.
Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight) finished 7th, Rebecca Fahringer (Kona Maxxis Shimano) 9th, Erica Zaveta (Garneau – Easton p/b Transitions LifeCare) 16th, Corey Coogan Cisek (Amy D. Foundation) 19th, Emily Werner (Amy D. Foundation) 20th and Rebecca Gross (Zero D Racing) 23rd.
After finally getting the Worlds monkey off his back in Bogense, Van der Poel won his 27th international race of the season at Maldegem. Michael Vanthourenhout (Marlux – Bingoal) took second and Toon Aerts (Telenet Fidea Lions) third.
Kerry Werner (Kona Maxxis Shimano) finished 26th, Drew Juiliano (Grit World Racing p/b Voler) 32nd, Eric Thompson (MSpeedwax.com) 34th, Tyler Cloutier (TCCX) 36th and Dylan Postier (Garneau – Easton p/b Transitions LifeCare) 38th.
