Cyclocross rarely knows such glamour, despite richly deserving it. And Vegas had it all: shiny things, light things, new things, expensive things; trade shows were ever thus. Oh, and the hangovers. I’m sure there were some immense hangovers.

A casual glance at this array of goodies might convince you that their purpose was to make you faster. Anyone who has ever pressed a pedal in anger can tell you otherwise. These gadgets exist solely to tell you how slow you are. They can express inadequecy in figures accurate to the third decimal point. The all-consuming guilt that can be inspired by a powermeter is phenomenal. If I ever find myself poor (poor in a serious way, not poor in my current self-proclaimed, irreverent, slightly flippant way) I will qualify as a psychoanalyst and specialise in treating the anxieties of middle-aged bike racers. I would never go hungry again.

The Nor’Easter ‘Cross Powered by Eastern Mountain Sports is coming up this Saturday, September 24th in Burlington, Vermont. But before the racing gets underway, we’ll be hosting a number of great events, all are open to the public and will be a great opportunity to get to know some of the best racers in the world – and maybe pick up some new techniques.

At Interbike on Wednesday, you see beyond the glitz and glamour of carbon fiber road wheels and fixed gear glory. You feel the grass, you smell the dirt, sweat, blood, tears … you know it’s almost time for CrossVegas. You check your watch over and over again, counting down to the moment when you can finally start heading to the event you’ve been waiting for.

University City, Montana – Following the launch of the International professional cyclocross season in Las Vegas, the top athletes in the sport are preparing to compete at the inaugural Gateway Cross Cup, Wednesday, September 21st at Heman Park in University City, Missouri. A first for the region, athletes from across the United States and Europe will be competing for prize money and coveted UCI ranking points that are up for grabs at this internationally sanctioned event.

The Belgians came, they saw, and, oh man, have they conquered. Well, an American did grab one win and that was a UCI race, so I guess it counts for something. The first week of the international season is under way and is there ever a bunch to talk about! First is CrossVegas, so much going on there. We can’t not talk about this weekends upcoming races in Seattle, Vermont and Maryland. Did you catch the velo bowl? Jurgen Mettepenningen is confident in Pauwels, Aernouts and Vantornout. National Champ Todd Wells will not defend his stars and stripes this January; London Olympics and Louisville 2013 are the goals. Finally, in this week’s Working Man’s Edition there were just too many of you, so instead, there’s a list of all the riders that deserve some respect!

Portland, OR — Katheryn Curi Mattis has announced she’ll be dusting off her cleats for the women’s cyclocross race at CrossVegas on September 14th. Curi Mattis is a perennial threat in any contest she enters, but she will certainly have her work cut out for her — CrossVegas attracts some of the best cyclocross racers in the world and has become a regular highlight of the bicycle industry’s annual trade show.

Tim Johnson and Jeremy Powers: teammates no more. Watch these two champions clash for the first time at Cross Vegas wearing opposing colors. Before they meet on the field, they will do battle at the Interbike/PDW Circulus for an exhibition race and press conference.

There were two more bikes of note, and Ken Bloomer sent us some specs and photos of even more bikes to lust after. The first is the Firefly Ti Cross with an Enve tapered fork. It features Campa Record 11, Chris King R45 Campa hubs with Enve 45 rims and a custom internal cable routing carbon stem. It’s total weight? A mere 6.5 kg.

Here at Eurobike, among the fancy carbon mountain bikes, quirky commuter rigs, sexy road bikes, latest cycling fashions and the most diverse group of bike-nerds in the world, is the newest collection of cyclocross rigs and components. Just about every bicycle manufacturer, large an small, has some sort of cyclocross offering here at the 2011 Eurobike bicycle trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

A simple stroll through the Eurobike trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany is impossible. It’s the largest bicycle trade show in the world, and such a distinction means it’s a sensory overload of all things bicycle. Two-wheeled (and three- and four- and one-wheeled) eye candy of all shapes, sizes colors and versions assault the visitor’s senses on several levels.

Boston, Massachusetts – The Providence Cyclocross Festival presented by Interbike, one of the premier cyclocross events in the country, will open registration at midnight on Thursday, September 1. This year’s edition of the race, to be held on the 8th and 9th of October, will include a UCI Category 1 race on Saturday and a UCI Category 2 race on Sunday. Both days will be part of the new Shimano New England Professional Cyclocross Series presented by Verge for the elite racers and the amateur Verge New England Championship Cyclocross Series.

“We are extremely excited about this race,” said Race Director Chris Huebner. “Manitoba has never seen anything like this.” He added: “Racing under the lights has really grown in popularity over the past number of years. Races like Starcrossed in Seattle and CrossVegas during the Interbike industry trade show in Las Vegas are among the biggest and most well-known cyclocross events in North America, attracting quality fields of racers and huge crowds.”

Longmont, Colorado — The nation’s biggest cyclocross race, CrossVegas, has taken CLIF® BAR as its first title sponsor. The original energy bar made with organic ingredients, CLIF BAR is increasing its annual participation from supporting to title sponsor in a multi-year deal concluded recently.

Clement’s Donn Kellogg has spent a good part of his life around tires, and after relaunching the Clement brand and bringing cyclocrossers the PDX and LAS cyclocross clinchers in 2010, he’s been focused on expanding his tire line-up with both additional treads and tubular tires.

The result of his efforts? A tubeless, seamless cyclocross tubular that eschews the hand-made construction of cyclocross tubular tires like Dugast, FMB, Challenge and Vittoria, and instead adopts Tufo-like technology but promises a more supple casing.

Last year, Mad Alchemy presented the PRO Signature Line, embrocations inspired by the professional cyclocross racers that use their products. In 2011, Mad Alchemy decided to take a slightly different approach by brewing limited edition embrocation blends inspired by some of, Mad Alchemy founder, Pete Smith’s favorite races. CrossVegas was high on the list.

Continental adapted its popular Speed King mountain bike tire for ’cross, and it’s easy to see why this tread has been popular in the fat tire world.

Last year at Interbike, Gates Carbon Drive Systems announced its new CenterTrack carbon belt drive drivetrain, and Cyclocross Magazine is the first publication to test the system on a cyclocross bike. We’ve recently received a Raleigh carbon singlespeed outfitted with the new CenterTrack system and have enjoyed a few rides on the stunning 15 pound machine.
