As the 2017 Flandrien of the Field, it is only fitting that Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) would perform well at the DVV Trofee Flandriencross, named for Hamme’s hometown hero Greg Van Avermaet. Last year, Van der Poel became the first Dutchman to win the race and on Sunday he was looking for two in a row.

After Laurens Sweeck (ERA-Circus) took the holeshot, Van der Poel wasted little time getting to the front and pulling away from the field. His lead after one lap was ten seconds and save a lap two encounter with the ground, he rode an impressive race that showed why he is the favorite for a second-straight Flandrien of the Field award.
Wout van Aert (Crelan-Charles) and Michael Vanthourenhout (Marlux-Napoleon Games) formed the chase duo until Van Aert broke free midway through the race for a solo second. Vanthourenhout held on for third.
The ride of the day perhaps went to Corne van Kessel (Telenet Fidea Lions), who recovered from a close encounter with a fan to finish fourth.
