Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) was looking to get a hard cyclocross effort in on Friday and what better way to do cyclocross than to race Friday’s C2?
Van der Poel’s two victories thus far this season have come relatively easy after early attacks, but on Friday he was tested into the middle of the race by Toon Aerts (Telenet Fidea Lions). Van der Poel’s second attack freed him from Aerts, and he cruised to victory in the World Cup warm-up.
Aerts finished a strong second in perhaps his best race after his injury at the Fiuggi World Cup, and Vincent Baestaens outdueled Eli Iserbyt (Marlux-Napoleon Games) to finish third.
Cyclocross Magazine spoke with each of the three podium finishers after the race. Stay tuned for our continuing coverage from Waterloo.
