First, it was a social media joke. A hashtag. Then…
The Foam Party took off. With no afterparty planned for the race, the jokers behind the Twitter handle (Spencer Haugh, Brandon Gavic and Tim Hayes) did the unimaginable: they found a venue days before the event, secured it, found sponsors – including Cyclocross Magazine – and basically planned for the party of the century, all with no idea if anyone would show up.
And then it got crazier. With the events all getting switched to Saturday, the party needed to be moved up a night. “We’ve never sold so much beer in one night,” the club later said. With an extra day to nurse hangovers, everyone cut lose and came out to play. The line to get in stretched around the block. Jeremy Powers DJ-ed a set. Geoff Kabush crowd-surfed. The Belgians lingered in the back room, dancing to techno. Amy Dombroski high-fived everyone in sight. Lars van der Haar tore up the dance floor.
Prime, the club where the Foam Party was held, later told promoters that when Sven Nys walked in, it was louder than the time Micahel Phelps attended an event there. Cyclocrossers, you’ve proven once again that you know how to bring the party.
