2009 Cyclocross National Championships Live Coverage Day 2

hey folks, we’re up and running again after a last minute change.

how’s every doing? in the earlier races, we had two repeats – Rivera and Huang both took victories.

so we’ve got the men’s 10-12 and 13-14 going on right now

We’ve got the 10-12 and 13-14 men out on the course.

in the earlier races, we had Tiziana Dehorney win the 13-14

Grant McElroy is leading the 10-12 field

Course is looking slippery and cold… its frostbite weather

Ian Haupt, Peter Goguen, and I think Gavin Haley are leading the junior 13-14 race right now. It’s going by quickly, they’re coming into 1 to go!

and mina anderberg took the youngest group again.

Gage Hecht is chasing hard in the 10-12, that’s a tight battle for the jersey!!!

Goguen just edged out Gavin Haley for 2nd and third – that was tight.

Daniel Parks in the mix there, Austin Vincent in there too – but there were some lapped riders mixed in too. Bear with us, we’ll get it sorted out.

That was a really tight battle last time thru

Ben Hogan of Louisville, CO was a ways off the pace, but gavce it everything at the finish

these kids are looking pretty darned pro out here!

Gage Hecht of CO stomped the final lap and had a good gap to take the championship! 10-12

Grant McElroy fought hard to take 2nd – a really strong ride by him. Spencer Petrov Zachary Mikkelson of Hood River Oregon right in there too. Need to sort out who was in 5th and which riders were lapped there at the end.

Riders still streaming in, lots of them are leaving it all out on the course. They’re giving it absolutely everything! Pretty awesome to see!

Logan Owen, a national champ from last year is lining up in here. It’s a deep group of contenders.

Zane Godby and Nate Morse, both of Clif Bar, stromed the front and took the hole shot there. Pretty impressive early show by Ben Turner’s team

NorCal favorit Isaiah Rapko had a front row grid spot!

Ayd Hibner-Hereford of ABQ, NM is out there on a singlespeed today. I wish him well, but hope my cold fingers don’t have to type his name too many times…

Jonathan Page stopped by just now to chat. He’s loving the conditions but hasn’t ridden the course yet. He’s hoping for more snow actually, but said it’s a far cry from the muddy sunny conditions of Igorre.

Colorado is all over this race – a huge portion of the field.

Logan Owen for some reasomn was misplaced in the second row at the start. That didn’t help his cause against Godby. He’s got Clif kids all around him too…

that was some of the best racing we’ve seen so far. great speeds and skill plus lead changes.

those lap times were about 6:40. owen won despite four crashes and being held up in the pit

Karen Brems former world tt champion is racing masters this afternoon, she was just spotted rolling around

The Planet Bike kids couldn’t say enough about their edge wheels. Both winners Haupt and Huang credited them as their lifesavers today

Both were riding Dugast Rhinos Huang at 21, and Haupt at 26

Trebon is on the start list for the Singlespeed race today, lets see if he risks it all for SS glory

at any icy hairpin. no crashes surprisingly.

ryan weaver is in fifth it looks like. and then tim jones.

we’ve got leland gilmore from river city too. huge fields.

for these non title races, we think the more the merrier.

and maybe even a c race makes sense for the local crowd and fans who make the trip

finally the hand warmers are kicking in…we are getting some real words out!

they’re about 15 seconds slower but most of these guys battle well with the A’s

the difference is most of them can’t make the rideable run-up.

on the ground there’s 4 inches, but they swept the course. so it’s mostly corners that are sketchy.

here come the leaders. 3 to go. rich maile is sitting behind jt fountain. chris sheppard is now making his way to the front. will he make it up there?

john, i’m curious too. as a lowly cat 3 i did a quick poll before my race… a lot of cat 2s and better doing warm up races before their real age group race.

we’ll get you more results from earlier races after this ss race.

this will be the first time in three years a Lalonde doesn’t win it. The Lalonde brothers should be in the Pro race, perhaps to help J. Page.

Chris Sheppard, a mountain bike pro, is Canadian, so this is the one race he can do.

JT Fountain has a good lead but Sheppard is tearing it up. Let’s see if either can ride the run-up.

we’ve got some breaking news though. there is a protest being filed for the 15-16 group.

involves a complaint about a podium finisher intentionally crashing out another when he was getting back up

i just saw a video of it, it was hard to tell but there was some contact.

i wouldn’t want to have to make that call.

Nate Morse is filing the complaint. He finished in sixth.

I just finished pre-riding the course. Lots of black ice and brown dirt patchs. The run ups are getting VERY hard to ride. The good news it its getting warmer:)

we may just have to focus on the younger races. the four hit the run-up together, and gibson bobbled! she dabbed and got gapped!!! this is tight racing.

Just spoke to Wendy Williams – she reported still icy conditions even though the sun is finally beaming down on it.

According to Wendy, though, she didn’t see very many crashes out there – sounds like most were pretty cautious (and smart) in the corners and really gassing it on the straights.

The favorites were all clearing the tricky run / ride-up every lap, in spite of the tricky conditions there.

Looks like Beth is doing ok after the crash, although she was initially pretty shaken up. i don’t think she saw the challenge to her place coming!

She’s signed up for the Elite race on Sunday – we’re hoping she’ll still be able to rally for that.
