As we saw at Sea Otter 2014, Lake’s MX 331 cross added black to the color choices alongside their iconic bright orange, which means you no longer have to look like your supporting the Dutch cycling or soccer team when you hop on your cyclocross bike (although we wouldn’t fault you if that was you intention all along).
The folks at Lake Shoes finally have a little breathing room now that they updated their model and got them out to their dealers. The MX 331 cross, since its inception, is retained with the BOA system, and unlike the Fizik shoes we saw earlier in the week, they opt to use the nylon cords rather than the steel.
The upper segment of the shoe is made from a combination of mesh and kangaroo leather. The latter material is becoming increasingly popular as a shoe material in general, and with a much better reason than wearing an exotic skin of an animal from down under.
Kangaroo hides, when treated correctly, are just as strong as other natural leathers even though the modern tanning process keeps them thinner, which translates to a lighter material while maintaining strength and durability. Lake Shoes also treats their material with a Microblok, which prevents the growth of microbes and germs.
The availability is current on the MX 331 cross shoes, which retail for $399.99. The toe spikes, as shown above, are replaceable, as well as those located in the area of the heel. They have plenty of sizes to choose from in a variety of three separate models: men’s standard, men’s wide, and woman’s specific. The sizes are as follows: Men’s sizes: 39-48:50, 39.5-46.5. Women’s sizes: 36-43, 37.5-42.5.
