Here in the U.S., there are a handful of bigger races like a CrossVegas or Night Weasels that are held during the week, but most cyclocross racing is on the weekend. In Europe, weekday racing is a much more common occurrence.
One of those weekday races is the Kermiscross held today in the Belgian village of Ardooie. Despite its mid-week nature, the race still drew a healthy amount of European cyclocross talent.
Also racing in Ardooie was Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek/Knight Composites). After allergies got to her at Zonhoven over the weekend, Compton was back on the strong form she has consistently shown this season when bee stings and pollen do not get the best of her.
Compton took the win in the Women’s race, finishing ahead of Ellen Van Loy (Telenet Fidea Lions) and Loes Sels (Crelan-Charles).

Thus far this season, Wout van Aert (Crelan-Charles) has been caught in the shadow of Mathieu van der Poel’s (Beobank-Corendon) dominance. Heading into Ardooie, Van Aert had yet to win a cyclocross race this season.
That changed on Thursday when Van Aert took the Kermiscross win. Toon Aerts (Telenet Fidea Lions) and Michael Vanthourenhout (Marlux-Napoleon Games) were second and third, respectively.

The mid-week Kermiscross was a warm-up for a big weekend of European cyclocross. Saturday is Superprestige Niels Albert CX in Boom and Sunday is the Telenet UCI World Cup in Koksijde. Stay tuned to Cyclocross Magazine for reports and results from both races.
