With temperatures soaring into the 90s in Waterloo, both the fast racing and the heat were on the minds of everyone at Trek headquarters in Waterloo on Friday. Riders needed plenty of ice water and cold towels to cool down after the race, and when we spoke with them for our post-race interviews, both the race and the heat were topics of conversation.
Katie Compton and Sanne Cant escaped early in the race, and then Compton exploited Cant’s crash on the stairs to get a winning gap she would not relinquish.
Loes Sels rode a steady pace for 45 minutes to finish second, and Christel Ferrier-Bruneau celebrated her three-year old’s birthday with a third-place finish.
Cyclocross Magazine spoke with each of the three podium finishers after the race.
