In the first UCI cyclocross race of the year, French rider Steve Chainel and American Kathryn Cumming both rode to a second place finish in the Men’s and Women’s Races, respectively, earning the first UCI cyclocross points of the 2015/2016 season. We’re still digging through plenty of content that we gathered in China, including interviews with the winners as well as a profile on the handmade American bikes that were brought to the country by American athletes, and today we offer our interviews with the runners-up of the Station One Race.
Chainel was in contention early at the front of the race until his Di2 wires were pulled out of place by his spokes, costing him a solid ten seconds in the race.
“This is only my second time coming to China, and the people here are already like ‘Come on Steve, come on!'” His next dream outside of racing in China? Coming to the United States to race at many of the courses he has watched on YouTube.
Cumming sat at the front of the race with five other riders in a close match through the tight woods, with many riders trying to do the best they could in the technical sections of the course as the leader was pulling away in the flats.
“[This course] has elements of a lot of [American] races with its own flair,” Cumming said of the race in China. “A lot of our courses in America have longer straightaways and are more smooth. The bumpiness added an aspect to this… I’ve heard great things of this race in the past, and it’s a trip of a lifetime… It’s a first-class setup.”
