The Junior Men 17-18 UCI racing has been exciting, and Sunday’s domestic finale in Reno did not fail to deliver a final performance filled with high drama. After one of the favorites Lane Maher (Hot Tubes Devo) dropped back after an early crash, Ben Gomez Villafane (Top Club Cyclocross) Benny Hopped to the front alongside Henry Jones (Bend Endurance Academy) and Scott Funston (Rad Racing NW).
Jones was befallen by a flat tire midway through the race, foreshadowing what was to come, and Funston and Gomez Villafane battled into the last lap. Gomez Villafane eventually got a gap by riding the Belgian stairs and escaped to a national championship.
We chatted with Gomez Villafane, Funston, third-place finisher Dillon McNeill (Trek Cyclocross Collective and Maher after the race.
