UNION CYCLISTE INTERNATIONALE (UCI) C2 STATUS
With UCI status, the New Year’s Resolution will draw top professional domestic and international competitors vying for prize money and for UCI points in their respective categories. Situated one week before the 2012 USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships in Madison, WI, and two weeks before the UCI World Masters Cyclocross Championships in Louisville, KY, the timing and locale of the New Year’s Resolution will also attract competitors who are racing themselves into peak form.Hilton Indian Lakes Resort has already served as a stop on the Chicago Cyclocross Cup Calendar, but the New Year’s Resolution will debut a challenging new course that meets UCI standards. Professional and amateur competition will be held on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with a calendar of ancillary social functions to be determined.
The race will be hosted by the Chicago Cyclocross Cup, a regional amateur race series that has grown by over 400 percent in the last three years. Series Director Jason Knauff, a resident of Chicago, anticipates that a UCI event will bring previously unmatched excitement to the local calendar. “This is something we have been planning for a long time,” said Knauff. “There has been so much energy surrounding our series and our hope is that this event will reflect that. With the emergence of world-caliber events here in the Midwest, the timing was right, but UCI approval was just the first of many steps. We’re counting on regional businesses and local teams coming together to show what the Chicago cycling community is capable of.”
