In one of the most hotly contested races of the day, Frank Gonzalez moved up from a fourth row call up to solo to the win in the Men’s 50-54 race, much to his surprise.
On technique and fitness… I can’t imagine a better course. You have to know how to ride your bike for sure, and you have to be fit. You have to be one of the top five fit guys, so today I got lucky.
On his training… I just structured six weeks of training. I will admit that’s the first time I’ve done that.
On his expectations… I thought if I could get a first or second row start I might stand a chance. So when I got called up for fourth I thought, ‘I did all that training for nothing.’ But I just had some luck today.
On the win… I can’t believe it. I honestly can’t believe it. Maybe in five minutes.
