Katie Compton (Rabo-Giant) and Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) took the wins in the deep sand at the 2011 Fidea Scheldecross in Antwerp, Belgium.
Compton overpowered her competition on the sand-filled course, finishing a full minute ahead of Belgian Sanne Cant, despite having been forced to run to the pit early in the race with a mechanical issue.
On the men’s side, Sven Nys overcame two Telenet-Fidea racers in Tom Meeusen and Rob Peeters, who were motivated to have a good showing for Fidea, their team and the race’s sponsor. With a five-second gap on the teammates, Nys handily soloed to his seventh victory of the season. Meeusen came in for second, but Peeters was outmatched by Dieter Vanthourenhout in the last lap, and the BKCP-Powerplus rider took the last podium spot, with Peeters rolling in for fourth place. Of his repeat victory, Nys told Belgian press: “I think it my duty to perform here.”
American rider Jonathan Page took 22nd place. Additionally, the American J.A.M. Fund rider, Jeremy Durrin, who is in his second weekend of Euro racing, improved upon his 35th spot in the World Cup in Spain last Sunday by moving up to 34th place.
