Sunny skies created another dry and fast day in Toronto, and the racers took advantage, setting a blistering pace on the hilly, grassy course at Day 2 of the UCI C1 Toronto International Cyclocross. Described by some as one of the top candidates for a North American World Cup, many top pros made the trip up North in search of UCI and NACT points.

Natasha Elliott (Garneau Club Chausseurs) extended her lead in the NACT Series with another win on Day 2 of the Toronto International Cyclocross, narrowly holding off a surprising late-race charge by Planet Bike’s upstart junior, Kaitlin Antonneau. With a different course from Saturday, Elliott was not able to open up large gaps on her chasers, and Antonneau closed in on the NACT leader but ran out of time and track. Pepper Harlton (Juventus Cycling Club) finished in third.

In the men’s race, CyclocrossWorld-Cannondale wasted no time in getting off the front. Andy Jacques Maynes (Bissell) had his typical fast start, but crashed hard early in the race, landing on his hip and was unable to finish the race. With Jacques-Maynes gone and Saturday’s surprise third place finisher Andrew Watson far back from a poor start position, Powers, Johnson and Driscoll got their gap, extended it easily, and then took off the gloves in an all-out inter-team fight for the win.

Late in the race, Tim Johnson looked to have the win secure, as multiple crashes by teammates Driscoll and Powers left him in the lead. But Powers, fresh off an off-day race with “only” eighth place on Day 1, had something left in the tank. After his last crash, he chased hard to catch Johnson just prior to the finishing straight, and outsprinted him to take the NACT win.
