The 2019/20 Telenet UCI World Cup series resumes this Sunday with the annual classic at the Citadel of Namur. Known as a race for the “mountain bike-sters,” the circuit features a hilly, challenging course with gnarly descents, steep run-ups and the famed rutted off-camber.
In the Elite Women’s race, Katerina Nash (Clif Pro Team) returns as the World Cup overall leader. She holds a 40-point lead on Anna Kay (Experza Pro CX) and a 44-point lead on Kaitie Keough (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld).
Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Corendon – Circus) enters as the hot rider in the World Cup series after winning at Koksijde and finishing second at Bern and Tabor. Annemarie Worst (777), a noted mountain bike-ster, looks to get back to her winning ways after taking the wins in Bern and Tabor.
Leading the U.S. contingent are newly minted National Champions Clara Honsinger (Team S&M CX), Katie Clouse (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld) and Madigan Munro (Boulder Junior Cycling). They are joined by Keough, Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight), Rebecca Fahringer (Kona Maxxis Shimano), Raylyn Nuss (MAAP / MINI U.S. Cyclocross Program), Sammi Runnels (Squid x Eliel), Lizzy Gunsalus (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld Devo) and Lauren Zoerner (Alpha Bicycle – Groove Subaru).
Canadian National Champ Maghalie Rochette (Specialized x Feedback Sports) leads the Canadian contingent. She is joined by Ruby West (Pivot / Maxxis p/b Stan’s NoTubes), Kelly Lawson (Hardwood Next Wave), Siobhan Kelly (Black Dog Racing) and Claire Steciuk (Hardwood Next Wave).
Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon – Circus) heads up the Elite Men’s start list. Van der Poel does not have a winning streak to speak of for this year’s race given he has only won one race in a row after not winning on Saturday at Ronse. Toon Aerts (Telenet Baloise Lions) took the win there.
Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) returns as the World Cup overall leader with an 18-point lead on Aerts.
The U.S. Elite Contingent includes Kerry Werner (Kona Maxxis Shimano), Curtis White (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), Max Judelson (Voler / Easton / HRS / Rock Lobster), Andrew Juiliano (Voler Pro CX / Cure IBD p/b Shimano) and Andrew Giniat (Pony Shop CX).
Canadian National Champ Michael van den Ham (Easton / Giant p/b Transitions LifeCare) and Cameron Jette are the Canadian Elite Men’s contingent.
Full Elite start lists are below. Stay tuned for a look at U23 and Juniors from North American racing at Namur.
World Cup Namur takes place on Sunday. The Elite Women’s race is at 7:30 a.m. EST and the Elite Men’s at 9:00 a.m. EST. The race will be broadcast on the NBC Gold app in the U.S. and FloBikes in Canada.
