VERONA, WISCONSIN—Riding “conservatively,” Brandon Dwight (Boulder Cycle Sport) added another National Championship jersey to his collection today, winning ahead of teammate and defending champ Pete Webber. Adam Myerson (Mock Orange Bikes), who just aged up to this category, rode with the two BCS riders for the first lap but dropped off the pace before crashing hard on the south end of the course and riding alone for third.
“I just tried to be safe,” Dwight said of his strategy, and the approach worked, as behind him Webber struggled against the course and went down a few times. The two riders from Colorado spent much of the first three laps together after dispatching Myerson. Dwight rode away from Webber when the two-time 40-44 champ tangled with the course tape and went down. “There is hardly any course tape left out there,” exclaimed Webber at the finish line, and certainly much of the field had trouble with the course, which had frozen overnight but started to thaw in the Wisconsin sun. “There are frozen ruts with a small layer of greasy mud coating them. It’s really hard to keep the bike moving in the right direction,” Webber said. “Brandon’s a better climber than me, and I’d get back to him on the technical sections, but he was putting 10 seconds into me every time up the hill.” Webber, writing for this publication, has dubbed the Madison course’s definitive feature the “Koppenbadger,” referring to the Koppenbergcross race in Belgium.
Both Dwight and Webber will be back for the Elite race tomorrow, and Dwight mentioned the UCI Masters World Championships in Louisville next weekend as a possibility, but said, “The best riders in the world won’t be there, so the standard of competition was probably better this weekend.”
Pete Webber is writing a daily column for Cyclocross Magazine called “’Cross Intel” all this week (and through Worlds). One entry was an interview with his teammate Brandon Dwight – if you missed it, it’s certainly worth a visit!
