Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival may not be a cyclocross race, but since the mountain bikers that race it tend to refer to it as a “road course,” and some serious cyclocross powerhouses are landing on the podium, we thought it deserved some mention, and photographer Amy Dykema was able to provide us with some inside info into this cult-status event, as well as some killer photos.

The Night Weasels is held in between two of New England’s biggest cyclo-cross races, and these three events in a seven-day span were dubbed the “Holy Week” of cyclo-cross last year. The other two races, Gloucester and Providence, are the first two races in the Shimano New England Professional Cyclo-cross Series Presented by Verge. They draw the nation’s top professional and amateur racers, with fields of up to 2,000 racers.

University City, Montana – Following the launch of the International professional cyclocross season in Las Vegas, the top athletes in the sport are preparing to compete at the inaugural Gateway Cross Cup, Wednesday, September 21st at Heman Park in University City, Missouri. A first for the region, athletes from across the United States and Europe will be competing for prize money and coveted UCI ranking points that are up for grabs at this internationally sanctioned event.
As the fields in the US become steadily more international, we’re seeing Euro after Euro at the top of the field, though there’s no doubt that some of the American racers are mixing it up right along with them. Today, Helen Wyman (Kona) again took the win in the Women’s Elite race, and Tom van den Bosch beat out Ian Field for the win in the Men’s field.
Charm City in Baltimore, Maryland, has been hot and dry for the fast few years, which makes sense since as the second race weekend of the season, it’s still practically summertime. However, in keeping with the streak of bad weather on the East Coast for the past month, the race opened with a chilly, drizzling morning: perfect cyclocross weather. Racers and spectators alike complained about the cooler conditions, since this early in the season, the legwarmers are still buried in attics and basements. However, the cooler weather didn’t seem to hurt the Euro visitors, and Helen Wyman and Ian Field repeated their winning performances from last week at Nittany Lion Cross.
The Belgians came, they saw, and, oh man, have they conquered. Well, an American did grab one win and that was a UCI race, so I guess it counts for something. The first week of the international season is under way and is there ever a bunch to talk about! First is CrossVegas, so much going on there. We can’t not talk about this weekends upcoming races in Seattle, Vermont and Maryland. Did you catch the velo bowl? Jurgen Mettepenningen is confident in Pauwels, Aernouts and Vantornout. National Champ Todd Wells will not defend his stars and stripes this January; London Olympics and Louisville 2013 are the goals. Finally, in this week’s Working Man’s Edition there were just too many of you, so instead, there’s a list of all the riders that deserve some respect!
