Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival may not be a cyclocross race, but since the mountain bikers that race it tend to refer to it as a “road course,” and some serious cyclocross powerhouses are landing on the podium, we thought it deserved some mention, and photographer Amy Dykema was able to provide us with some inside info into this cult-status event, as well as some killer photos.

As the fields in the US become steadily more international, we’re seeing Euro after Euro at the top of the field, though there’s no doubt that some of the American racers are mixing it up right along with them. Today, Helen Wyman (Kona) again took the win in the Women’s Elite race, and Tom van den Bosch beat out Ian Field for the win in the Men’s field.
Charm City in Baltimore, Maryland, has been hot and dry for the fast few years, which makes sense since as the second race weekend of the season, it’s still practically summertime. However, in keeping with the streak of bad weather on the East Coast for the past month, the race opened with a chilly, drizzling morning: perfect cyclocross weather. Racers and spectators alike complained about the cooler conditions, since this early in the season, the legwarmers are still buried in attics and basements. However, the cooler weather didn’t seem to hurt the Euro visitors, and Helen Wyman and Ian Field repeated their winning performances from last week at Nittany Lion Cross.

Mother Nature wanted to have her say today as racers lined up for the first MFG Series race in Kirkland, WA. Big Finn Hill park, for the second year in a row, played host to the Kick Off Cross race delivered by Cycle University. Unseasonably warm weather, or a late summer as some would say, left the race course with burn-out grass and had racers churning up dust from the opening gun.
Sunday, Christian Heule proved that he is in the US for a reason this season: to win races. As the newest rider for Cannondale-CyclocrossWorld.com, he had big shoes to fill — Jerey Powers’ cycling shoes, to be precise. But so far, so good. Last night, he tweeted, “First race today for Cannondale-CyclocrossWorld.com and I won it. Thanks Stu Thorne for supporting me as car driver and mechanic.”
The first weekend of racing is over, and racers on the East Coast are feeling extremely tired after an incredibly muddy first weekend of cyclocross racing. The normally flat and fast course at Nittany was transformed into a muddy bog, and with the course running backwards on the non-UCI day two of racing, the racers started by almost immediately hitting a mud pit.
Jeremy Powers (Rapha Focus) and Helen Wyman (Kona) opened the 2011/2012 cyclocross seasons with wins at the 2011 Nittany Lion Cross in Breinigsville, Pennsylvania.
The first race in Washington state is always one to attend, especially when it’s on Labor day weekend. Top riders, old friends, and a whole slew of cheers or jeers were happily reunited. Presented by Team Double check, the Labor Day cyclocross race was a success in drawing in riders from all over including Nick Weighall and David Richter. Raleigh’s new addition, Jenni Gaertner of Raleigh USA even came out to throw down with an impressive win since her contract at Raleighs Midsummers Race. Located at a new venue, “The Pit” (Lloyd Enterprises Retail Yard) in Milton, Washington. this gravel pit was converted into an abusive cross course that tested the skills and hydration of many.
Clear blue sunny skies set the stage for what was to be the warmest and dustiest Langley Cyclocross Classic on record. Just over 100 participants took to the farm fields and forests of Aldor Acres for this early season ‘kick in the pants’ ’cross race. The course featured a long flat gravel section, barriers, a long run-up with a knee high log at the base of it (which only the top few were able to ride it), a single track descending section followed by some twisty turns through the trees in almost sand-like ground.
In a shocking turn of events, 2010 series champion Lewis Rattray has had the 2011 Dirty Deeds Urban Cyclocross series wrestled from his hands, being defeated in the third and final race by Red Shift Racing’s Andrew Blair.
Lewis Rattray has continued his dominance of the Dirty Deeds Cyclocross Series, taking out the second race at Jackson Reserve on Sunday.
Cyclocross in July? Sure, it’s been done before in densely-populated New Jersey. But at a resort in Central Washington, a good 90 minutes from the closest major city? It seemed like a harebrained idea by the folks at Raleigh that had little chance at drawing out all but the most hard-core cyclocrossers.
It’s always cyclocross season somewhere, and last weekend, that somewhere was New Zealand, where the AJ Hackett Bungy NZ Cyclocross Championships were held. Put on by the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, the race had some interesting terrain and some fantastic race pictures. The winners of the day were Dan Warren and Anja McDonald, and hopefully we’ll be seeing more from racers in the other hemisphere this season.
