(Sept. 10, 2016) – The first day of the USA Cycling Professional Cyclocross Calendar (Pro CX) featured a fast, winding 3.5-kilometer course for Elite women and men at Rochester Cyclocross in Rochester, New York.
Teammates Katie Antonneau and Emma White of Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld.com finished one-two in the Women’s Elite Category 1 race to start the Pro CX season.
The men’s top spot for Pro CX was captured by Jeremy Powers of Aspire Racing, who finished second overall on the Pro CX individual standings last year.
It was the ninth year for cyclocross races in Rochester, with the elite women starting on the new Genesee Valley Park course with unseasonably hot and humid conditions. Caroline Mani (Raleigh Clement) took the holeshot, but she couldn’t hold the pace as young Canadian Maghalie Rochette (LUNA Pro Team) came to the front with Antonneau. Rochette and Antonneau quickly had the field strung out with Amanda Miller (Boulder Cycle Sport/YogaGlo), Crystal Anthony (Maxxis-Shimano Pro Cyclocross) and White (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld.com) giving chase.
Rochette was able to hold off a persistent Antonneau until the fifth and final lap, when she needed to make a bike change. That cost Rochette a spot on the podium as she saw Antonneau, White and Miller pass.
Antonneau finished with a time of 45:41, with White 21 seconds back in second and Miller 25 seconds back for third. Of the 36 women who started the Elite C1 Race, 26 finished.
“Great race for @cdalecxworld ladies today. One, two punch with myself & [Emma White] . First race of the season is always so nerve racking. Very hot day out there made for such a hard race. Thanks Rochester staff for putting on such a great day,” Antonneau said on Instagram after the win.
The men’s Elite Category 1 race saw 45 riders take the course with changing weather conditions at Rochester Cyclocross. The winds picked up to 20 miles per hour, which blew up hot, dry dust on the course, at times creating havoc in the back of the pack with diminished visibility.
Fresh off the Tour of Alberta stage race, Danny Summerhill (Maxxis-Shimano) jumped out to a quick lead on the first of seven laps. With the field packed tightly at the front, Curtis White (Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) attacked at the beginning of the third lap. Jeremy Powers (Aspire Racing) had been sitting in, but followed White’s move. The racing stayed very tight all day with several lead changes.
Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz Factory Racing) decided to make his move on the fourth lap just as Summerhill flatted, which ended his hopes of a podium. Ortenblad kept the pressure on for two full laps, then saw Jamey Driscoll (Raleigh Clement) hammer off the front. “I’m just trying to stay calm and just let my legs do the talking,” commented Driscoll before the race about taking the first win of the Pro CX season.
At that point the lead group unraveled, and Powers attacked the final lap, gapping Driscoll and powering to the win in 57:38.
Driscoll finished just five seconds back for second place. Stephen Hyde (Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) took the third step of the podium, 12 seconds back.
First-year Elite Ortenblad was able to hang on for fourth. Four-time men’s Elite National Cyclo-cross champion Jonathan Page finished in ninth. Of the 45 riders who started the Men’s Elite C1 race, 39 completed the seven laps.
Rochester Cyclocross continues Sunday, Sept. 11 with 13 amateur cycling races in the morning, followed by Category 2 Elite races for men and women in the afternoon.
The event is produced by Full Moon Vista Bike & Sport, which also hosts the popular Rochester Twilight Criterium in August.
Rochester Cyclocross is sanctioned by USA Cycling and the UCI as one of eight C 1 events for 2016-17 Pro CX in the U.S. It is also the only Class 1 cyclocross event to be held in New York this year.
Next on the calendar will be Trek CXC Cup in Waterloo, Wisc., Sept. 17 and 18, with C1 and C2 races. Nittany Lion Cross will be held in Breiningsville, Penn., Sept. 17 and 18, with C2 races.
