As the Amgen Tour of California begins to wind down, with only a weekend of racing to go, riders are beginning to make their moves and prepare for the last stage on Sunday. Even the racer’s tweets about the Tour are getting scarce, a sure sign that the race is getting serious.
Yesterday, riders had an short day with a 15-mile time trial in Solvang. At the end of Stage 6, Chris Horner (Team Radioshack) was in first overall. Horner, while not enough of a cyclocross racer to qualify for our rankings, has been known to get muddy in a ’cross race on occasion, which makes him noteworthy to us. Our ’cross racers didn’t fair as well in the stage, with former U23 world time trial champ (and, of course, former Elite world cyclocross champ) Lars Boom in 31st being the best result from our group of racers in Stage 6.
As of the end of Stage 6, overall results for Cyclocross Magazine’s Amgen Tour of California Cyclocross Leader’s Jersey are as follows:
31 Tyler Wren (Jamis-Sutter Home)
37 Chris Jones (Team UnitedHealthcare)
53 Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Optum Health)
60 Jesse Anthony (Kelly Benefit Strategies-Optum Health) (Anthony is now seventh in the Overall King of the Mountain standings.)
78 Lars Boom (Rabobank)
110 Andy Jacques-Maynes (Bissell)
117 Jeremy Powers (Jelly Belly)
131 Jamey Driscoll (Jamis-Sutter Home)
In response to the negativity surrounding cycling because of the recent doping scandal news, Anthony tweeted, “If you appreciate courage, determination and the desire for victory, come watch the Tour of CA tomorrow. I promise you will love what you see.”
