Conditions at the 2020 Mid South Gravel were a cyclocrosser’s dream (and perhaps the WHO’s and CDC’s nightmare).
Top gravel racers from around the country congregated in Stillwater, Oklahoma for two days to contest the first major gravel race of the season. The Mid South Gravel, formerly called Land Run, had over 2,000 registrants, with over 1,400 racers congregating despite the muddy conditions and threat of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
While USA Cycling issued a statement urging promoters to cancel all cycling events, the Mid South gravel race was unsanctioned.
Mother Nature did her part in trying to wash away virus fears, and in the process, left a muddy course for cyclocrossers to excel at, but destroying drivetrains, disc brake pads and gravel glory dreams in the process.
2017 Collegiate USA Cycling Cyclocross Champion Hannah Finchamp of the Orange Seal Offroad Team found the red mud to her liking, winning the women’s race in under 8 hours and beating all but 23 of the men.
Cyclocross star and former DK200 winner Amanda Nauman (SDG – Muscle Monster) put her mud and bike-preservation skills to good use, finishing second, 14 minutes back, and 38th overall.
