Payson McElveen Takes 2020 Mid South Gravel Race

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic and growing number of bans on gatherings throughout the country, the promoters of the Mid South Gravel race in Oklahoma plowed through the mud and kept the 2020 event moving forward. Entrants were welcomed to defer their entry to 2021, but would have to pay another entry fee.

For many of the 2000+ registrants, it was a positive announcement, positive enough for over 1400 to attend.

For others, it was too risky of a move due to the novel coronavirus. Oklahoma may not currently be a COVID-19 hotspot, but non-symptomatic racers from around the country congregating in a small town certainly could contribute to the virus’ spread:

With the threat of COVID-19 spreading fast across the country, it didn't seem wise to potentially be a contributing factor to the spread of this virus

The top ten men in the 100-mile race came from seven different states and two countries.

While USA Cycling issued a statement urging promoters to cancel all cycling events and stopping permits, the Mid South gravel race was not a USA Cycling event.

Conditions at the 2020 Mid South Gravel presented their own challenges without considering viral and community spread threats. Mother Nature left a muddy course for cyclocrossers to excel at, but destroying drivetrains, disc brake pads and gravel glory dreams in the process.

Payson McElveen started the Orange Seal Offroad Team sweep of the day, defending his 2019 title. Just under ninety minutes later, McElveen’s teammate Hannah Finchamp beat all but 23 of the men to finish top woman.

For Ben. Not captured in these photos is looking skyward most of the way down the finish straight. These times and that race yesterday are unlike anything I’ve known before. Winning always feels amazing, but crossing the line yesterday felt strange in many ways. I know it’s not possible to honor someone’s life through a simple bike race, but I also know that I thought about him for all 6:23 yesterday. I felt incredible guilt about deciding to skip his service to go to work, but after talking to many of those closest to him, I know it’s what he’d have wanted. And that gave strength in yesterday’s chaos like nothing before. You would’ve loved it out there, Ben. In these crazy times, lean on your loved ones, and lean in to grit. McElveen dedicated his victory to the late Ben Sonntag, who was struck and killed while training in Colorado.

The conditions certainly took their toll, with 342 finishers of 784 starters in the men’s 100-mile race.
