This weekend, many of the top cyclocross racers in the country are revving their engines at the Thompson Speedway in Connecticut, contesting the KMC Cross Fest races and the start of the US Cup CX series.
However, not everyone made the trip out East, and some of our very best U.S.-based cyclocross racers have headed West.
Today, the West Sacramento Cyclocross Grand Prix serves up the first of two UCI C2 races this weekend, the first UCI cyclocross racing to hit Northern California in ages. If our records are correct, the last UCI races in Norcal were the USGP stops at Golden Gate and Watsonville.
This weekend, some top cyclocrossers are taking advantage of the rare opportunity to earn UCI points in the Golden State.
Jingle Cross World Cup winner Katerina Nash (Clif Bar) lives just over an hour away and didn’t pass up the chance to pad her UCI points total so close to home. Joining her is Cassie Maximenko (Van Dessel), who despite living on the East Coast, flew west to show off in front of her wheel sponsor Atom Composites wheels, which is also sponsoring the event. Jet-setting Emily Kachorek (Squid), fresh off two podiums in China, will also toe the line as a hopeful winner and event sponsor athlete. Thirty one women will take the start today in Sacramento.
On the men’s side, U23 National Champion Lance Haidet (Donnelly), Allen Krughoff (Krughoff Racing), Cody Kaiser (Lange Twins Winery/Specialized), Carl Decker (Giant) and Anthony Clark (Squid) are some of the top men contesting the men’s race at WSCXGP. Lining up behind them is a big group of Norcal Masters looking to take advantage of a high-quality field and score some much-needed USA Cycling points in their hunt for a good Reno Nationals start position.
A total of 55 men will take the start on Saturday, ten more than the Friday night men’s field at the KMC Cross Fest.
See the full start lists below, and stay tuned for more coverage from the 2017 WSCXGP weekend.
