Coyote Point Park in San Mateo has been a long-standing venue for cyclocross races in the San Francisco area for many years. It used to be home to a UCI-sanctioned race, one of the first in California.
In the past, the race has hosted prominent top cyclocrossers including former USA Cycling Cyclocross National Champions Todd Wells, Ryan Trebon, Barry Wicks (Collegiate), Gina Hall (Masters) and even former World Champ Thomas Frischknecht of Switzerland. The current event, as seen in this photo by Jon Suzuki, still commemorates this era:
Now, more than a decade later, the race still continues along the Bay as the sole cyclocross race from promoter Tom Simpson of Pilarcitos CycleSports. It's no longer a part of the Bay Area Super Prestige series, and not even USA Cycling sanctioned, let alone UCI sanctioned, but still manages to attract National Champion and Worlds racers as well as a healthy dose of amateurs.
Lining up this year were current Junior 15-16 National Champion Ben Gomez Villafañe, his World Championships-racing sister Caro (her first cyclocross race of the season), Baby Masters National Champion Andy Jacques-Maynes, former Worlds team member Justin Robinson, and former Masters World Champ Henry Kramer among others (full race are here).
This past weekend, photographer Jeff Vander Stucken covered the event and shared his photographs with the Cyclocross Magazine audience. See highlights and a full gallery from his day at the beach below.
