The first of the three major cyclocross series kicked off today with the Superprestige series in Gieten, The Netherlands. The top CrossVegas World Cup racers in attendance showed their American result was no fluke, taking control of their races and the 2015 Superprestige series lead.
In the women’s race, Sanne Cant (Enertherm-BKCP) put her sand skills on show, opening an early gap in the sand pit and riding away from the other racers. Brit Nikki Harris (Telenet Fidea), who skipped CrossVegas to focus on the European circuit, kept a strong chase, but couldn’t close the gap. Dutch star Sanne van Paassen (Boels-Dolmans) and Jolien Verschueren battled for third, with Verschueren landing the final podium spot.
In the men’s race, World Cup leader Wout van Aert (Vastgoedservice-Golden Palace) continued his winning ways, following a similar script of CrossVegas in Gieten to make a late surge to escape from everyone.

Lars van der Haar (Giant-Alpecin) was the only one to hold van Aert’s wheel after the Belgian surged to join and then pass early leader David van der Poel (BKCP-Corendon) on lap four. But with two laps to go, the elastic stretched and then snapped,with van Aert again riding away with an impressive display of power, without an obvious attack.
(Sven Nys (Crelan – AA Drink) overcame an early flat to contest the sprint with Belgian National Champion Klaas Vantornout (Sunweb-Napoleon Games) and van Aert’s teammate Tim Merlier. Nys would pull out of his pedal in the sprint, allowing Merlier to take third.
