Klaas Vantornout is the 2013 Belgian National Champion
MOL, BELGIUM – In a ride that was both surprising and deserving, Sunweb-Revor rider Klaas Vantornout put an exclamation point on an already outstanding season, attacking on the final few short climbs to escape from a group including Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus), Sven Nys (Lanbowkredit), Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb-Revor) and Rob Peeters (Telenet Fidea) to take the 2013 Belgian National Championships.
Albert, Nys and Pauwels did their best to reign in the lanky rider, but Vantornout refused to give them quarter and crossed the line alone, a mere handful of seconds ahead of a charging sprint for second. Sven Nys, clearly recovered from the illness that saw him lose the lead in the World Cup standings in Rome, proved the best of the rest, followed by Pauwels. Nys later told Sporza, “Sometimes you have to be happy with second place.”
In the women’s race, Sanne Cant took the win, followed by Ellen Van Joy and Joyce Van der Becken.
