Cyclocross Races to Highlight Day of Activities

The Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA) and Cross Partners will host Valmont Bike Park Fest on Saturday, October 17 at the future site of the Valmont City Park bike park.  Highlights of the day-long event will include sanctioned cyclocross races (for all categories), food, beverages, family-fun and a groundbreaking ceremony for phase one construction of the park that will feature a permanent cyclocross course.

With grading and earth moving for the bike park kicking off this fall and trail building scheduled to begin in early 2010, event organizers hope to boost community awareness of the park and push fund raising toward the final goal of $500,000.  To date approximately $365,000 has been raised to supplement city funds for building a world-class off-road cycling park in Boulder.

The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department will host a 30-minute groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. featuring speakers from the City of Boulder and bike park partner, Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (BMA).

Other activities include:

  • ACA Cyclocross races: $5 of each entry fee goes directly to the Valmont bike park and will be matched by the Gates Family Foundation!
  • Kids Fun Area: jumpy castle and mini bike skills park
  • Beer Garden sponsored by Boulder Beer, right on the race course
  • Bike Jump Jam
  • Food and cycling vendors
  • Site tours to check out the bike park site and plans

All of the activities take place at Valmont City Park, near the corner of Airport and Valmont Roads. Limited parking is available on Airport Road so commuting by bicycle is encouraged.

At 132-acres, Valmont City Park is the largest parcel of land designated for park development in Boulder. Phase one construction, getting underway this fall, calls for development of a permanent dog park, 18-hole disc golf course and 40-acre bike park. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
