Race Results: Sels, Van der Poel End Season With Wins at Sluitingsprijs Oostmalle

The 2017/18 season wrapped up with the traditional non-series Sluitingsprijs Oostmalle on Sunday. The race marked the end of a long cyclocross season that began five months ago, and for some, it was also the end of their elite racing careers.

In the Elite Women’s race, Sanne Cant (IKO-Beobank) looked for one last win to cap her impressive championship season, and Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) hoped to add win number 32 on the season, after picking up his 31st this week at the Soudal Classics Masters.

Cant would not get one last win. Loes Sels (Crelan-Charles) took top honors, while Cant took a DNF. Maud Kaptheijns (Crelan-Charles) and Annemarie Worst (ERA-Circus) rounded out the podium. Elle Anderson (Milwaukee – Alpha Motorhomes) finished 17th.

Van der Poel, on the other hand, was able to win his 32nd race of the season, tying Roland Liboton’s record set during the 1983-1984 season. After five months of racing ’cross, Van der Poel does not get much of a break with the first UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in South Africa two weekends away.

Laurens Sweeck (ERA-Circus) and David van der Poel (Corendon-Circus) rounded out the Men’s podium. Eric Thompson (MSpeedwax.com) finished 38th and Tyler Cloutier (Garneau-Easton) 43rd.

Thijs Aerts won the U23 Men’s and Niels Vandeputte the Junior Men’s races.
