Under normal circumstances, the winner of Cyclo-Cross World Cup opener in Kalmthout, Belgium would not have been a surprise. But an unfortunate incident the day previous at Kleicross race in Lebbeke, Belgium could have forced a different outcome. Last Saturday, Kalmthout pre-race favorite Sven Nys tripped on a set of barriers, causing his bike to bounce off the ground and smack him in the face so hard he had to abandon the race. It left him with a bruised, swollen eye and a deep cut above it along the eyebrow. But even with the use of only 1 ½ eyes, Nys pulled off the World Cup win. [More…]

Star Crossed - Full Report, Photos, and Video

Despite earlier weather reports of sun and past years of dry racing, it shouldn’t be a surprise when a major ‘cross race comes to the Pacific Northwest and it rains the whole day. Racers awoke to a drizzle that grew increasingly stronger and was a constant rain by the time the first race, the women’s 3/4 race, started at 2:15. The mostly-grass course was slick and soggy for that first race, with the nearly 70 riders coming to a halt at the first run-up after several riders went down in a challenging hairpin before the logs. But it wasn’t just the mud and the grass that proved to be treacherous; the wet and mud-greased velodrome would cause problems for not only the amateurs but the pros as well. What would have been a fast grass crit had conditions been dry became a true test of bike handling skills in every turn.
The early rains kept the crowds at home, with small crowds watching the early races, but as the big events neared, spectators came out in force, braving the rain and mud, and gladly paying a $5 entrance fee to watch the races and enjoy the festivities, which included a beer tent, door prizes, bratwurst stand and espresso cart.

World Premier of Remember to Breathe on June 27th
June 12th, 2008 Filed Under cyclocross news, video
Young film producer Evan Schmitt just graduated from high school last week, but he’s certainly not taking the summer off before he attends University of Washington in the fall. He’s been hard at work getting ready for the world premier of his second film Remember to Breathe on June 27th in Roslyn, Washington. The event is free to the public.
Schmitt, also the producer of the film ONE, spent all of last season following top domestic pros at major cyclocross races as well as some “off-season” road events such as the Mt. Evans Hill Climb and Mount Hood stage race. The 70 minute movie is over half ‘cross, and features interviews and racing by ‘cross stars such as Todd Wells, Jonathan Page, Andy Jacques-Maynes, Troy Wells, Ryan Trebon, Barry Wicks, “voice of ‘cross” Dave Towle, and Morgan Schmitt (Evan’s brother).
Schmitt’s DVD offers more than just the movie however. Schmitt told CXM “There’s an extra 50 minutes of bonus features including ‘cross crashes and more interviews with the riders.”
Schimtt filmed and produced all of this while still a senior in high school. He’s got a bright future for sure.
Stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the DVD. See the movie trailer and the press release below:
