UCI Cyclocross Explained - Off-season Homework

May 5th, 2008   Filed Under editorial, racing

UCI Cyclocross Rules ExplainedAlbert Einstein once said, “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.”

If you’re like most of us, you don’t have much ambition to beat Page, Johnson or Trebon at at domestic race, let alone battle Nys and Wellens over in Europe. But perhaps you still have plans to toe the line with the big guns at a UCI-sanctioned race this fall, or will battle other folks your age in a top level junior or espoir race at a UCI sanctioned event or masters worlds. Even if that’s not the case, you still never know if this is the season it all comes together, mandatory upgrades happen, and you make the leap from C’s to A’s. In any of these situations, you’ll need to be familiar with the UCI rules that may govern your event before you get to that start line.

Although there are hundreds of pages of UCI regulations, Cyclocross Magazine has spent hours culling through all of them so you’ll be prepared. While we covered the no disc brakes while training rule a few days ago, there’s a lot more to know.

Here are 5 top common violations of UCI rules that you should be sure to avoid: [More…]

The Next Big Thing: Out of Competition Bike Tests?

May 2nd, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross news, editorial, racing

Yesterday, our own assistant editor, Josh Patterson, was riding a disc-brake equipped Salsa La Cruz to the park, getting ready to put it through another beat-down for an upcoming bike review for the magazine. On the way, he was urgently stopped by an older Italian gentleman. The man started asking him about his racing background and aspirations, and soon Josh revealed his ambitions of mixing it up with the pros this year in a few UCI races. Big mistake. After hearing this the gentleman disclosed he was a vacationing UCI official, and that Josh was now banned from any UCI races because he was caught training on a cyclocross bike with disc brakes.

Huh?

Training with disc brakes is illegal?

Who knew?

Well, now Josh and I both know.

Seems ridiculous, and it is. And no, this didn’t really happen. But it could. Can you imagine? Now instead of flying to Mexico (or telling UCI officials that’s where you are) or some other remote area to escape potential out-of-competition drug tests, we’ll have to ride our disc-brake equipped bikes in remote places, at night, alone, and in secret to avoid the out-of-competition bike inspections. Cyclocross may be five months away, but organizers and promoters are working hard on the upcoming season. The MAC (Mid Atlantic Cyclocross) series has released its schedule and now includes the high-profile Whitmore’s Landscaping UCI races in the Hamptons.

MAC ADDS NEW RACES FOR 2008

May 1, 2008; Conshohocken, PA, USA: MAC Cyclocross made what may be the biggest off-season news in U.S. cyclocross this year when Series Director Mike Hebe announced that the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup in New York’s “The Hamptons” was joining the series at the organization’s annual meeting. The two-day Whitmore’s event is famed as the richest women’s cyclocross race in the world, and last year also drew three-time World Champion Erwin Vervecken and no fewer than five defending national champions from around the world for the Elite Men’s race. With the addition of the UCI-sanctioned Whitmore’s weekend, MAC has programmed a 10-race schedule that stretches from the tip of Long Island to Washington DC - an area roughly the same as The Netherlands and Belgium combined. Season’s Last Race or First? Cult Cross Wrap-Up

Larry G tried something new this year…a spring ‘cross series in Colorado. The races proved to be the ideal fix for the ‘cross diehards, as well as a great chance for newbies to try out the sport without getting swarmed by huge packs and amped up racers releasing months of cyclocross-less angst. Is he on to something? Check it out yourself in 2009, or consider organizing your own informal or official local spring series. Here’s Larry’s series write-up.

Cyclocross Jumps? Cult Cross mixes it up for funIt’s funny how similar promoting and actually carrying out a cyclocross series closely resembles the actual racing of a cross race…

At first it seems like a wonderful idea, something you are sure to finish and have a great sense of accomplishment when you reach the “one to go” bell. But somewhere along the way, the challenges and obstacles you are faced with become incredibly difficult to overcome. In my case, shoveling out “single track” from two feet of snow for two weeks prior to your first race promotion is a bit overwhelming, then you get it done and it snow another foot and stay cold. Somehow, you manage to get a course ready for riders to race on and you know what, they come, even in the spring, and they race cross like it’s Nationals in Kansas City, they leave it all out there, run the tall barrier sections, ride the three inch deep mud, negotiate the incredibly difficult snow run, survive the “truth or dare” bridge and come through lap one covered in mud with their drive trains begging for mercy.

The racers’ fitness is no where near what it will be when fall arrives, but they tackle the course as if it is fall, cross makes them feel alive and it’s great to be getting a jump start on their road or mountain bike seasons. Every racer talks about the race with a smile on their face when [More…]

UCI Bans Tubeless Tires and Zertz Inserts, Considers Banning Barriers

April 1st, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross news, racing

Note: This was one of three April Fools stories, posted on April 1, 2008. Although we would not be surprised by a ban on barriers, tubeless tire systems, Zertz, and Buzzkill are not banned.

Dura Ace Tubeless WheelsIn a surprising move by the UCI, the international governing body of cyclocross has banned all tubeless tire systems, Specialized’s Zertz Technology, and is considering banning man-made barriers in all UCI cyclocross races. While this may not impact most amateur racers, USA Cycling’s new president, Mark Abramson, says USA Cycling is likely to follow suit.

The move to ban tubeless tire systems is a serious blow to Shimano, NoTubes.com, and Hutchinson’s plans to make tubeless tire technology replace tubular tires as the best tire option for cyclocrossers. The new rule outlaws any tire that does not use a separate latex or butyl tube to retain air. By this definition, any tire and wheel system, whether tubeless tires mounted on Shimano’s Dura Ace Tubeless-ready wheels or Stan’s 29er rims, or do-it-yourself systems using conventional rims with electrical tape and conventional tires with sealant, is not legal for any UCI-sanctioned race. We presume that Tufo tires, the lightweight glue-on tires (as well as their unique clincher version), which are built without an inner tube, will also be included in this ban.

Also affected by the off-season rule changes is the popular shock absorbing Zertz technology by Specialized. Former Specialized product manager and pro ‘cross rider Andy Jacques Maynes said Specialized plans to [More…]
