Issue 3 Update: At the Printers

June 23rd, 2008   Filed Under editorial, print mag

A hint of Issue 3Seems like it’s time for an update on our next issue.

We’ve been quiet about it intentionally, since with Issue 2, we probably jumped the gun a bit, letting folks know it was at the printers and that it should be in the mail shortly. But what we didn’t realize is that for some, that meant a month crossing the country on snails, creating some anxious ‘cross fans!

So while we’ve kept a bit mum on Issue 3’s progress, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to improve our delivery and eliminate some unknowns as we ramp up for the upcoming season. As part of this “hard work” we’ve written some big (and painful) checks to the USPS and dealt with endless forms and meetings to make sure future issues are delivered in a more reliable fashion. And we’re contracting with a mailing service to take care of the bigger mailings. What does that all mean for you? Hopefully faster and more reliable delivery. Down the road, that means quicker hits of ‘cross love in return for your current patience.

Back to Issue 3. It’s at the printers as of last week, and with some luck, that means it’ll start mailing next week. And, with some more luck, once it leaves our printers, it won’t take a month for it to arrive in some easter locations. It’s going to be a new process for us again, so you never know, but we’re going off of what we’ve been told (and what we’re paying for).

Some folks have been asking about our intended frequency, as it’s clear not everyone just wants to be surprised. Well, our goal has been 4 issues a year for the first year, but not necessarily at exact three month intervals. The current goal is to be a bit more frequent during the season. To this end, while we’ve taken a little more time to work behind the scenes and get out Issue 3, Issue 4 is already coming together and should have a quicker turn around with an early September delivery. Looking further ahead, our Issue 5 should be in November. Looking further out, if all goes well, and we do our job and keep advertising and subscriber growth going, we may up the frequency. That’s the goal!

You can help us get there by continuing to the spread the word on blogs and forums that our mag is worth a race entry fee. Now is the time to get those “I keep meaning to subscribe” subscriptions in, as subscribers this week will still get in our initial Issue 3 mailing. Tell your buddies to get their own. There’s another reason to get those subs in now: one downside of going to a mailing service is that we won’t be able to send out back copies as frequently.

Stay tuned for our Contest #2 winners and updates into Issue 3. Get ready for a great season!

New Product Spotlight: Ellsworth Roots Cyclocross Frame and Fork

June 17th, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross technology, new products

Ellsworth’s Roots Cyclocross FrameAs manufacturers start to shift their focus to the cyclocross season, we’ve been getting a bunch of new product in for review. One item that we’re about to test is the Ellsworth Roots ‘cross frame. Ellsworth is known mostly as a mountain bike company, but it has had a ‘cross frame since the mid-90’s, well before most manufacturers hopped on the bandwagon. That version of the Roots was a very unique $2200 TIG-welded purple-anodized aluminum, Sachs New Success Ergolever-equipped and Rock Shox Paris Roubaix steered ride that showed off the company’s mountain bike “roots.”

After a seven year hiatus, Ellsworth re-introduced their Roots model last Interbike, and we’ve received a production model to ride.

The version of the frame is also TIG welded aluminum, but with a classy [More…]

World Premier of Remember to Breathe on June 27th

June 12th, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross news, video

Young film producer Evan Schmitt just graduated from high school last week, but he’s certainly not taking the summer off before he attends University of Washington in the fall. He’s been hard at work getting ready for the world premier of his second film Remember to Breathe on June 27th in Roslyn, Washington. The event is free to the public.

Schmitt, also the producer of the film ONE, spent all of last season following top domestic pros at major cyclocross races as well as some “off-season” road events such as the Mt. Evans Hill Climb and Mount Hood stage race. The 70 minute movie is over half ‘cross, and features interviews and racing by ‘cross stars such as Todd Wells, Jonathan Page, Andy Jacques-Maynes, Troy Wells, Ryan Trebon, Barry Wicks, “voice of ‘cross” Dave Towle, and Morgan Schmitt (Evan’s brother).

Schmitt’s DVD offers more than just the movie however. Schmitt told CXM “There’s an extra 50 minutes of bonus features including ‘cross crashes and more interviews with the riders.”

Schimtt filmed and produced all of this while still a senior in high school. He’s got a bright future for sure.

Stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the DVD. See the movie trailer and the press release below:

Need Motivation to Start Training for Cyclocross? CX Pros Dominant at Teva Games

June 8th, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross news, racers

Katie Compton Winning Mountain Bike Races to get Ready for CyclocrossThe other day we highlighted some of the recent road racing exploits of Euro ‘cross specialists as they get ready for the season that’s still three and a half months away. Sven Nys further added to his “off-season” results with an impressive 6th in the Saturday’s cross-country UCI World Cup in Fort William Scottland. But it’s not just the Euros who are ramping up for ‘cross through serious racing; our domestic ‘cross pros are doing the same.

Need some motivation to start getting the fitness up? Let’s look at how our country’s best are ramping up:

On Saturday, Ryan Trebon (Kona Factory Team) and Katie Compton (Spike Shooter / Primus Mootry) dominated the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado, taking early leads and turning them into more than five minute gaps by the end of each of their 2+ hour races.

Having only decided to attend the event two weeks ago, Trebon was unsure of his form, but found out early, taking the lead on the first hill and never looking back, finishing over 6 minutes on Jay Henry.

Compton rode a similar race, extending a fast start into a 5 minute lead over Heather Holmes. Compton continued her success in the hill climb on Sunday, with the self-proclaimed non-climber winning by 16 seconds over Pua Sawiki. [More…]

Tom Vannoppen Hangs It Up

Tom Vannoppen, 29, once thought to be the next dominant Belgian cyclocrosser, retired from cycling this week. Vannoppen nearly won the world title in Zolder in 2002 but since has suffered several rough years which involved multiple injuries, depression, and last season, a drug scandal. He tested positive for cocaine and was fired by his Sunweb-Projob team, the former team of American Jonathan Page.

The once-promising rider has decide to hang it up after his latest struggles. He told Gazet van Antwerpen, “Look, I’ve had an awful lot [More…]

The Disc Brake Debate

June 2nd, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross technology, editorial

Our own Josh Patterson has been testing a disc brake equipped Salsa La Cruz, and so disc brakes have been on his mind. And while the brakes that now dominate the mountain bike market are banned from UCI cyclocross events, he weighs in on the future of the brakes in our beloved sport:

Tektro Lyra Disc Brake for CyclocrossDisc brakes banned from cross? Well kinda. Depends on who you are and the sanctioning body under which you race.

Discussions of the pros and cons of disc brakes generally ignite heated debates among members of the cyclocross community

Many of the reasons given for not using disc brakes - weight penalty, overkill for road and cyclocross racing - have less to do with using disc brakes than using brakes designed for mountain bikes.

There’s no way around it, discs will always weigh more than canti’s. But they don’t have to weigh as much as they do now. When it comes to using disc brakes with road levers there’s very little selection. Last time I checked the number of mechanical disc brakes designed for use with road levers was two: the road version of the venerable Avid BB-7 and Tektro’s Lyra.

Per wheel the road BB-7’s weigh in at 361 grams. The Lyra has a published weight of 148 grams per wheel. These weights include caliper, rotor and mounting hardware. The Lyra is sign of things to come; 140mm rotors instead of the traditional 160mm sizing reduce weight as well as stopping power. The reduction in braking power is not necessarily [More…]
