Confessions of a Sandbagger

March 24th, 2008   Filed Under Issue 1, interviews, print_archives

hector_finely_sandbagger.jpgEveryone has had some experience with sandbagging. Perhaps you find yourself always being dominated by the same racers. Or maybe you find yourself coming home regularly with swag from B and C-level races? Perhaps you’ve bid on the eBay Upgrade Points auction offered by a group of New England racers that we covered in Issue 2. Regardless, we’ve all got a sandbagging story. Hector Finely offered up his for our premier Issue 1.

This story was originally published in Cyclocross Magazine’s Issue 1, November 2007, and proved to be a reader favorite.

Confessions of a Sandbagger
By Hector Finely

“Dude, I was riding beginners two years ago.”

“I have no bike handling skills.”

“I don’t ride my bike at all during Jan through Sept.”

“I don’t have any fitness or talent.”

“It’s not like I’m a Cat 2 racing B’s and winning everything.”

“I don’t race road or mountain like everyone else.”

“I only ride once during the week.”

I said those things repeatedly, trying to convince my friends, and more importantly myself, that what I was doing was [More…]

March 22nd, 2008   Filed Under editorial, print mag

This is NOT where you'll find Cyclocross Magazine. Photo by flicker user tracyhunter

Thanks to the input from many of you, we’ve been calling and emailing local bike shops across the country and steadily growing our list of shops that carry Cyclocross Magazine. We’re not in Borders yet, but these ‘cross shops below should have Issue 2 in stock already. If you’re not a subscriber yet or you’re one of the unlucky folks who still haven’t received yours from USPS, you can hop down there and check it out. Maybe give them a call to make sure they’ve got some left.

If your favorite shop in your state isn’t on the list below [More…]

Cyclocross gets front-page coverage on Vail DailyLast weekend, cyclocross made its spring debut in Eagle, Colorado. A Friday storm brought fresh snow and a challenging drive to the race, but racers were greeted with perfect ‘cross conditions, with snow, mud and frozen tundra waiting to put a fresh coat of ‘cross dressing on their dried-out bikes. The races even made the front page of the Vail Daily newspaper with a story on the new spring series. The race brought out pros, first-timers, and baby-carrying [More…]

March 16th, 2008   Filed Under contests, editorial, print mag

Cyclocross Magazine Contest #2As some of you have seen in our print mag that’s still traveling the country, we’ve got another contest running, which means another chance to win some really nice stuff.  TRP, Gore, Vittoria, Bike Mine, De La Paz Coffee, 1×9 Designs, Twofish and our own Hector Finely have all donated prizes for this contest.  It’s a chance for you to get to know your local promoters a little better, and give them some exposure to the rest of the ‘cross community.

Because USPS still has not delivered our mag everywhere, we’re extending the deadline to April 10th to give our mid-west and east coast readers more time to get something in.  Read all about out Contest #2.

Got questions about the contest? Wanna sponsor our next one? Contact us.

Dude, Where’s My Mag?

Is this why they’re taking so long? USPS trucks being repaired. by flickr user: spatulatedWell, it’s clear from the emails we’ve received USPS hasn’t made it that far with the magazines. Is it the price of gas? Their trucks in disrepair? (See photo). As we mentioned before, this time we used bulk rate shipping (typical magazine shipping rate & speed) but we’re really wondering if it’s worth the savings (it is significant). [More…]

It’s the Off-Season…Pace Yourself, Issue 2, and Issue 1 Archives

March 10th, 2008   Filed Under editorial

Pace yourself in the off-season…even while just reading about ‘cross.Unless you live in Colorado and are getting ready for Larry Grossman’s Cult Cross Series starting this weekend, it’s the off-season right? So that means not going to hard, and pacing yourself so you don’t burn out before the season starts.

Well, not all our readers can heed this advice. Here’s a short note from a friendly reader who just got his Issue 2 in the mail:

“Needless to say I was excited to see the new issue in the mail box when I arrived home yesterday. Not shortly thereafter I have to say that I was fairly disappointed, in myself. In one (long) sitting I had burned through the entire issue. At this point I started to feel a bit like a junkie with a serious problem. I wish I had paced myself. I just couldn’t stop.

Well done guys, well done.”

So even if the USPS is unfortunately [More…]

Trade In Your Dirty Bike for a Euro Bike, Take Our Poll

March 7th, 2008   Filed Under cyclocross technology

Well, based on our last poll, it seems like over half of you haven’t bothered to clean and lube your ‘cross bikes since the season ended, let alone overhaul them. Does that mean you’re gonna pass on that crusty heap to some unlucky buyer via craigslist or ebay, and get yourself something new? Maybe now’s the perfect time to do just that. Thanks to Mark Legg, from one of his many Euro trips, we’ve got some photos of a few dreamy Euro cyclocross bikes seldom seen here in the U.S. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill Ridleys. Perhaps it’s time to be the first in your area to own one of these babies?

After wiping off that drool, why not take our new poll. Remember that Issue 1? Tell us what you liked best about it.

Seattle International Bicycle ExpoPacific Northwest bike geeks have reason to celebrate this weekend, as Group Health’s Seattle International Bicycle Expo takes over Cruise Terminal 30 in Seattle. It’s described as “a complete celebration of cycling, with exhibits and presentations from all aspects of the sport.” Sounds fun to us. Portland gets the NAHMBS, and then Seattle gets this cool event. Is anyone else outside of the Northwest feeling left out? [More…]

The Season Not Taken - Spirit of ‘Cross Essay

March 2nd, 2008   Filed Under contests, editorial

Many of us set goals for the season, follow some sort of training plan, and hope that these things lead to more ‘cross fun. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Here’s another entry to our “Spirit of ‘Cross” essay contest, by John Parbst, that addresses just this issue. (View the growing list of published Spirit of Cyclocross Essay Entries here.)

The Season Not Taken

Robert Frost - by flickr user adam.riggallI intended to follow the crowd this cyclocross season. Among my stated goals were to have my screaming roadie shorts tan fade into a mellow knicker blend, wipe out both the stutter-step and “soft bits” landings on my remounts, and relish the sensation of a complete loss of control in the sand. These were the small details that occupied my transition from road to mixed terrain as the sun began to dip lower across its southern arc in September. Actually, now that I think about it, my larger goals were set down in ink and paper months earlier. [More…]
