Petition: Let ‘Em Race at Nationals
December 26th, 2007 Filed Under cyclocross news, editorial
We’ve been made aware of a petition to change the way concurrent races are run and handled at the national championships. This petitions stems from the re-running of the masters 60-64, 65-69, and 70+ categories on Sunday morning, after racers were pulled from their event on Saturday because they were in danger of being lapped by the 50+ racers. Some racers did not know about the time change or already had travel plans to return home, and the petition is aimed at avoiding such a problem in the future.
If you have an opinion you want to express, you can view the petition here or contact USA Cycling. Or leave a comment here or send us an email!

Fast Old Guys: Dwight Beats McCormack for 35+, Coats Surges to Win 40+, and Wittwer and Overend Dominate
December 15th, 2007 Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing
Cold, windy, snowy conditions greeted the fast old guys, but it didn’t slow them down a bit. Being around for a while, these guys have seen all types of ‘cross conditions, and mostly were unphased by icy course or falling snow.
In perhaps the biggest upset of the day, Brandon Dwight (Boulder Cycle Sport) beat former multi-national champion Mark McCormack (Clif Bar) to win the 35+ Masters field. McCormack got held up in traffic in the last off-road section before the line, and Dwight opened up a huge gap to finish with the win.
The 40+ race featured a come-from-behind victory by Alan Coats (Morgan Stanley Specialized), who had a back row start but plowed through the field over the course of the race to seize the lead and win his third national championship over Gannon Myall (California Giant Berry Farms).
The only excitement in the 50+ race was a brief lead change when Ned Overend (Specialized) needed to swap bikes and retake the lead from Kutney from Van Dessel. Frank Wittwer won the 55+, passing many of the 50+ riders in the process.
The biggest controversy of the day was that the 60+, 65+, and 70+ riders got lapped and pulled in the confusion of the race, and have to redo their race Sunday at 11 am. They’re not happy.
