Single Speed World Champs “Crowned” in Portland
November 12th, 2007 Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing

Report by Steve Ransom and Andrew Yee
Over 140 riders contested the inaugural Single Speed World Championships in Portland. Hosted by River City Bicycles and the infamous and popular Cross Crusade series, the race had a bit of serious racing combined with a huge focus on fun. Riders qualified for Sunday’s main event through a one-lap prologue time trial on Saturday, but had a few options to lower their time via an off-road decent on aero-bars, and successfully bunny hopping barriers with a six pack of beer. The top 56 riders based on adjusted time qualified, but slower folks had a few more chances to participate in the big event by whining to promoters, chugging beer under 3 seconds, or racing a “last chance” mass start qualifying race, with the top 15 moving on. And if you were [More…]

Ask the Pro: What do you want to know?
November 5th, 2007 Filed Under editorial
If you had a chance to talk to a ‘cross pro, what would you want to know? While our focus here at Cyclocross Magazine is more on the average ‘cross racer, we average riders often find the pro’s perspective and personalities interesting, informative, and often entertaining. So, as we chat with some top racers, we’d like to give you a chance to ask the questions. Let us know what you’d like to learn, whether it being about their equipment, training (no wattage or heart rate questions, please), personal interests, or what they love/hate, or funny stories.
We’ve had many good comments on our interviews with Katie Compton and Jonathan Page (in issue #1, now mailing), and want to give readers more of a chance to steer our next set of interviews.
Comment here on what you’d like to know!

Weekend Crossings: Compton and Trebon Double Up in Boulder, Haywood and Bishop Win Tacchino
November 4th, 2007 Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing
Compton and Trebon take the wins again. How many times will we see this headline this season?
Two riders suffering from leg problems have ignored the pain and taken back-to-back convincing wins this weekend in Boulder. These two winners were not a big surprise - perhaps the biggest surprise was Chris Horner, beating many ‘cross specialists with a strong 5th place finish.

Trebon and Compton Take Redline Cup
November 4th, 2007 Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing
The Kona boys are back! After back to back defeats in Kentucky, Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks finished a convincing 1-2 in Saturday’s Redline Cup. Mountain bikers ruled the top four of the men’s race: Todd Wells showed he’s coming into form with a strong third place, Geoff Kabush charged through the field to take fourth, with Tim Johnson finishing a disappointing fifth. Denmark’s Joachim Parbo finished sixth ahead of Jeremy Powers who stacked it badly trying to hop a barrier.
Katie Compton continued her strong performance, dropping her competitors on the first lap and continuing to build upon the lead. Rachel Lloyd and Georgia Gould rode together in pursuit of compton, with Gould eventually dropping Lloyd. Kerry Barnholt and Portland’s Wendy Williams battled for fourth, with Barnholt winning in a sprint. [More…]

Katie Compton Interview - Cyclocross Magazine’s Exclusive Interview
November 2nd, 2007 Filed Under Issue 1, interviews, print_archives
This interview was originally published in Cyclocross Magazine’s Issue 1, November 2007.
Katie Compton is the reigning national cyclocross champion, as well as the silver medalist at the 2007 UCI World Cyclocross Championships. When Katie won her first national championship in 2004, she surprised her competitors and the media, but she wasn’t a stranger to competing at the top level. The three-time national cyclocross champion had already won gold medals with Karissa Whitsell while piloting their tandem in the Paralympics, IBSA and IPC World Championships, and U.S. Paralympic National Championships.
With such an impressive resume, one might expect Katie would be an uptight, type-A racer, but she’s surprisingly down to earth, modest, and much more like the girl next door, with the exception that she can kick your butt on a bike. We caught up with Katie after she got back from a training vacation in Montana and chatted about her background, the upcoming season, and her thoughts about the future of ‘cross.
CXM: Why do you race? Why ‘cross?
KC: Simply for the challenge of it; because I like to suffer. I like to push my body in training and racing and see what I can do. I like the competition, especially when I’m not as strong as other racers. [More…]

Jonathan Page Interview - Cyclocross Magazine’s Exclusive Interview
November 1st, 2007 Filed Under Issue 1, interviews, print_archives
This story and interview was originally published in Cyclocross Magazine’s premier issue, Issue 1, in November 2007.
February, 1999. Tilton, NH. It’s 26 degrees outside and snowing. Jonathan Page, one of the U.S.’s most promising cyclocross talents is starving, having just finished a three hour training ride in the miserable conditions.
“Hello, Upper Crust Pizzeria.”
“Yeah, Hi. I’d like a large two topping pizza, pepperoni and sausage. And can you rush it? I’m famished.”
“Sure thing, we’ll be there in 30 minutes”.
A rusty old Saab speeds up a snow-covered dirt-road, flying past the destination house. The road glows red from the car’s brake lights, as the driver realizes his mistake. Suddenly, the car appears to spin out of control, but inside, the driver is calm and focused, pulling hard on the emergency brake just after yanking his steering wheel to the left. The car nearly completes a full 180 degree turn, but the right front fender plows into the snow bank and stalls the car. [More…]
