Women’s Podium - 1: Compton 2: Gould 3:Sydor by Mark Legg Images

Both Saturday and Sunday at the USGP stop in Kentucky, the usual dominant Kona/YourKey.com pair of Trebon and Wicks failed to continue their streak of domestic wins. On Saturday, Jeremy Powers notched a big win, while on Sunday Tim Johnson took his turn on the top step of the podium. Katie Compton was dominant on both days, fighting off trio of Canadians and a determined Georgia Gould. In the Juniors, Luke Keough took double wins, as did Danny Summerhill in the espoir category (run within the men’s race). [More…]

Bessette and Powers Win Gloucester!

October 13th, 2007   Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing

Fresh from our New England correspondent, Kerry Litka:

Women’s Elite:
Lynn Bessette warmed up for the race by battling for top 5 in the Cat 2/3 Men’s race before riding away from the women’s field on the first lap to an easy victory. The rest of the field was racing for 2nd and a solid group of 5 riders worked together like a break in a road race to distance themselves from the pack. The group included Natasha Elliot of Ontario, Megan Elliot, Rebecca Wellons, and Amy Wallace (someone else was in there but I can’t remember who). It came down to a pack sprint and Wellons was 2nd, Natasha Elliot was 3rd.

Men’s Elite:

Tim Johnson was the favorite as he clearly has the home course advantage; a first lap mechanical took him out of contention for the lead and Jeremy Powers won the race, with Multe Urban, Christopher Jones, and Jesse Anthony close behind for second through fourth. Adam Myerson followed Tim Johnson as he tried to return from his rolled tire, and ending up outsprinting him for 5th. Full results here.

Course Notes:
The course was noticeably less technical than previous incarnations, and the trademark serpentine descents were omitted today. The run up, sand pits, and paved uphill start section remained the same. The weather was very uncrosslike - warm, breezy, and not a cloud in the sky. The course was dry and VERY fast according to racers; this was by far the fastest variation of the Stage Fort park venue to date.

The race definitely worked to the advantage of power riders and didn’t offer any opportunities for technically skilled riders to show their stuff. Packs of riders working together were common sights in all of the races of the day, and sprint finishes for many of the top 10 places determined most outcomes.

Compton Repeats, Wicks Gets the Win in NY

October 7, 2007; Southampton, NY, USA: Americans proved their strength in NY over this weekend, with Barry Wicks showing the world champion Vervecken that America’s cross racers keep getting stronger, and Katie living up to Vervecken’s expectations that she’s going to be the best in the world this year.

In the elite men’s race, Barry Wicks (Kona/YourKey.com) took advantage of World Champion Erwin Vervecken’s derailleur failure with half a lap to go to take the win at the second day of the Whitmore’s Landscaping Super Cross Cup, a UCI C2 event. Wicks and Vervecken were wheel to wheel for the lead when the Belgian’s derailleur snapped off his frame, not only beat the World Champion, but also the German National Champion, the Canadian National Champion and the U.S. National Champion (teammate Ryan Trebon). Wicks, who lost to Vervecken by a wheel in the previous day’s sprint finish, was never out of contention on the much more technical course featured on the second day at the Southampton Youth Services Center. Ryan Trebon, who also led much of the race, finished second with Jeremy Powers (CyclocrossWorld.com) a strong third. German National Champion Malte Urban (Heinz von Heiden) finished fifth behind Tim Johnson (Leer/Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld.com) while Canadian Champ Greg Reain (RWR/Colnago/Time) finished seventh. “It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t race it out to the win,” said Wicks. “But a win’s a win. Ryan didn’t feel too good after his efforts in the heat yesterday and I don’t think Erwin felt that good either.”

If nothing else, the weekend indicated that America’s domestic cyclocross program is growing in quality as well as quantity. [More…]

Whitmore’s Day 1: Compton Dominates, Vervecken Doesn’t

October 7th, 2007   Filed Under 'cross race results, cyclocross news, racing

October 7, 2007; Southampton, NY, USA: Don’t call Katie Compton a ‘Drama Queen’. The amiable U.S. National Champion quietly pulled into the Southampton Youth Services Center on Saturday looking relaxed and hanging out with her parents. Then she quietly stomped any drama out of the Elite UCI race to take the biggest slice of the richest prize purse ever offered for a women’s Cyclocross by a large margin. By the end of the first lap, Compton (Spike Shooter) had a 19 second lead. In the process, she had won $100 for being the first racer over the barriers on the first lap. The race, along with Bessette’s chain, blew apart on the third lap. Broken chains would turn out to be a recurring theme for the afternoon. When asked later if she knew that Bessette had broken her chain, Compton replied, “No, but I knew something was wrong because I can’t pull away from her that fast.” Compton eventually won by 2:30 over Bessette. Velo Bella’s Barbara Howe worked her way past racers throughout the race to place third.

If the women lacked for drama, the men’s race had enough theatrics to fill a Broadway theater. The start list included World Champion Erwin Vervecken (Fidea Assurance) and no fewer than three reigning National Champions: American Ryan Trebon (Kona/YourKey), Canadian Greg Reain (RWR/Colnago/Time) and German Malte Urban (Heinz von Heiden). Also present were a contingent of Belgian fans who had flown to New York just to watch the races. Despite the unseasonable heat, they proudly wore their bright red “Erwin Vervecken Supporters” jackets, prompting an immediate response from friends of American racer Robert Campos who made hand-written “Supporters of Robert Campos” signs from note paper and safety pinned them onto the backs of as many moving bodies as possible.

But the real drama was just beginning. The Americans, [More…]

2007 BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series “Ed Sander Memorial Cyclocross” in Buckeystown , MD

October 1, 2006: A record 325 entries piled into the grounds of the Lilypons Water Grounds for round #2 of the 2007 BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series on Sunday. The race’s 34% increase in entries over last year continues the series growth which has averaged approximately 27% per year for the past three year, confirming the series’ reputation as the “Fastest Growing Cycling Series in America”.

Weston Schempf and Betsy Shogren overcame adversity to win the Elite races at the event, which is promoted by the late Ed Sander’s cycling club, National Capitol Cycling Club. The unique course winds around lily ponds and trees of the Sander’s former employer, Lilypons Water Gardens. In many cases, they were ponds and trees that were once tended, and planted, by Sander himself. [More…]
